Genesis 50:1-16

HNV 1 Yosef fell on his father's face, wept on him, and kissed him. NIV 1 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. HNV 2 Yosef commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Yisra'el. NIV 2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him, HNV 3 Forty days were fulfilled for him, for that is how many the days it takes to embalm. The Mitzrim wept for him for seventy days. NIV 3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. HNV 4 When the days of weeping for him were past, Yosef spoke to the house of Par`oh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Par`oh, saying, NIV 4 When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, HNV 5 'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Kana`an." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.'" NIV 5 ‘My father made me swear an oath and said, “I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’ ” HNV 6 Par`oh said, "Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear." NIV 6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.” HNV 7 Yosef went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Par`oh, the Zakenim of his house, all the Zakenim of the land of Mitzrayim, NIV 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt— HNV 8 all the house of Yosef, his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. NIV 8 besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen. HNV 9 There went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. NIV 9 Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company. HNV 10 They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Yarden, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days. NIV 10 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father. HNV 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Kana`anim, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Mitzrim." Therefore, the name of it was called Avel-Mitzrayim, which is beyond the Yarden. NIV 11 When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim. HNV 12 His sons did to him just as he commanded them, NIV 12 So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them: HNV 13 for his sons carried him into the land of Kana`an, and buried him in the cave of the field of Makhpelah, which Avraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying-place, from `Efron the Hittite, before Mamre. NIV 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. HNV 14 Yosef returned into Mitzrayim - he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. NIV 14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father. HNV 15 When Yosef's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Yosef will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all of the evil which we did to him. NIV 15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” HNV 16 They sent a message to Yosef, saying, "Your father commanded before he died, saying, NIV 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died:
