1 In the seventh [month], in the one and twentieth [day] of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,
1
On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet:
2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
2
"Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people:
3 Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing?
3
Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing to you?
4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith Jehovah; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Jehovah, and work: for I am with you, saith Jehovah of hosts,
4
Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel"-the Lord's declaration. "Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land"-the Lord's declaration. "Work! For I am with you"-the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
5 [according to] the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, and my Spirit abode among you: fear ye not.
5
"[This is] the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and My Spirit is present among you; don't be afraid."
6 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
6
For the Lord of Hosts says this: "Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7 and I will shake all nations; and the precious things of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts.
7
I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory," says the Lord of Hosts.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts.
8
"The silver and gold belong to Me"-the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
9 The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts.
9
"The final glory of this house will be greater than the first," says the Lord of Hosts. "I will provide peace in this place"-the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
10 In the four and twentieth [day] of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,
10
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet:
11 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
11
"This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling.
12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it become holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
12
If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?" The priests answered, "No."
13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
13
Then Haggai asked, "If someone defiled by [contact with] a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?" The priests answered, "It becomes defiled."
14 Then answered Haggai and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith Jehovah; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
14
Then Haggai replied, "So is this people, and so is this nation before Me"-the Lord's declaration. "And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled.
15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of Jehovah.
15
"Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the Lord's temple,
16 Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty [measures], there were but ten; when one came to the winevat to draw out fifty [vessels], there were but twenty.
16
what state were you in? When someone came to a [grain] heap of 20 measures, it [only] amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it [only] amounted to 20.
17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; yet ye [turned] not to me, saith Jehovah.
17
I struck you-all the work of your hands-with blight, mildew, and hail, but you didn't turn to Me"-the Lord's declaration.
18 Consider, I pray you, from this day and backward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth [month], since the day that the foundation of Jehovah's temple was laid, consider it.
18
"Consider carefully from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid; consider it carefully.
19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth; from this day will I bless [you].
19
Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you."
20 And the word of Jehovah came the second time unto Haggai in the four and twentieth [day] of the month, saying,
20
The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;
21
"Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22 and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
22
I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother's sword.
23 In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts.
23
On that day"-the declaration of the Lord of Hosts-"I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant"-the Lord's declaration-"and make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you." [This is] the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
