King James Version KJV
Revised Standard Version RSV
1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
1
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
2
The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Ba'als, and burning incense to idols.
3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.
3
Yet it was I who taught E'phraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them.
4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
4
I led them with cords of compassion, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one, who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.
5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
5
They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me.
6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
6
The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them in their fortresses.
7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
7
My people are bent on turning away from me; so they are appointed to the yoke, and none shall remove it.
8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
8
How can I give you up, O E'phraim! How can I hand you over, O Israel! How can I make you like Admah! How can I treat you like Zeboi'im! My heart recoils within me, my compassion grows warm and tender.
9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
9
I will not execute my fierce anger, I will not again destroy E'phraim; for I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come to destroy.
10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.
10
They shall go after the LORD, he will roar like a lion; yea, he will roar, and his sons shall come trembling from the west;
11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.
11
they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD.
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.
12
E'phraim has encompassed me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah is still known by God, and is faithful to the Holy One.
