Isaiah 3

CEB 1 Now the LORD God of heavenly forces is removing from Jerusalem and from Judah every form of support: all rations of food and water; NIV 1 See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water, CEB 2 soldier and warrior; judge and prophet; fortune-teller and elder; NIV 2 the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, CEB 3 commander and celebrity; counselor, clever craftsman, and cunning charmer. NIV 3 the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter. CEB 4 I will make youths their commanders; mischief makers will rule over them. NIV 4 “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.” CEB 5 The people will oppress each other, each one against the other, neighbor against neighbor. The young will bully the old, the rogue, and the respectable. NIV 5 People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored. CEB 6 Someone will seize a family member, saying, "You have clothing! You be our leader! This mess will be your responsibility!" NIV 6 A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!” CEB 7 Someone else will cry out on that day, "I'm no healer! I have neither food nor clothing in my house! Don't make me the leader of the people!" NIV 7 But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.” CEB 8 Yes, Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, because the way they talk and act in word and deed insults the LORD, defying his brilliant glory. NIV 8 Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. CEB 9 Their bias in judgment gives them away; like Sodom, they display their sins in public. Doom to them, for they have done themselves in! NIV 9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves. CEB 10 Tell the righteous how blessed they are; they will eat the fruit of their labors. NIV 10 Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. CEB 11 Doom to the wicked; they are evil. What they have done will be done to them. NIV 11 Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done. CEB 12 As for my people—oppressors strip them and swindlers rule them. My people—your leaders mislead you and confuse your paths. NIV 12 Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path. CEB 13 The LORD arises to accuse; he stands to judge the peoples. NIV 13 The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people. CEB 14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: You yourselves have devoured the vineyard; the goods stolen from the poor are in your houses. NIV 14 The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses. CEB 15 How dare you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor? says the LORD God of heavenly forces. NIV 15 What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. CEB 16 The LORD says: Because Zion's daughters applaud themselves, walking with their chins in the air, flirting with their eyes, tiptoeing as they walk, feet jingling— NIV 16 The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles. CEB 17 the Lord will shave the heads of Zion's daughters, and will expose their scalps. NIV 17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.” CEB 18 On that day, the LORD will remove: the splendid ankle chains; headbands and moon-shaped pendants; NIV 18 In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, CEB 19 the earrings, bracelets, and veils; NIV 19 the earrings and bracelets and veils, CEB 20 the hats, bangles, and sashes; the amulets and charms; NIV 20 the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, CEB 21 the signet rings and nose rings; NIV 21 the signet rings and nose rings, CEB 22 the robes and capes; the shawls and handbags; NIV 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses CEB 23 the mirrors and linen garments; the turbans and the veils. NIV 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls. CEB 24 Instead of perfume there will be a disgusting odor; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of styled hair, shaved heads; instead of expensive clothes, rags as mourning clothes; instead of beauty, shame. NIV 24 Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding. CEB 25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle! NIV 25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle. CEB 26 Her gates will lament and mourn; desolate, she will sit on the ground. NIV 26 The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
