Isaiah 54

HNV

MSG

1 Sing, barren, you who didn't bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who did not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, says the LORD.
1 "Sing, barren woman, who has never had a baby. Fill the air with song, you who've never experienced childbirth! You're ending up with far more children than all those childbearing women." God says so!
2 Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations; don't spare: lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.
2 "Clear lots of ground for your tents! Make your tents large. Spread out! Think big! Use plenty of rope, drive the tent pegs deep.
3 For you shall spread aboard on the right hand and on the left; and your seed shall possess the nations, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
3 You're going to need lots of elbow room for your growing family. You're going to take over whole nations; you're going to resettle abandoned cities.
4 Don't be afraid; for you shall not be ashamed: neither be confounded; for you shall not be put to shame: for you shall forget the shame of your youth; and the reproach of your widowhood shall you remember no more.
4 Don't be afraid - you're not going to be embarrassed. Don't hold back - you're not going to come up short. You'll forget all about the humiliations of your youth, and the indignities of being a widow will fade from memory.
5 For your Maker is your husband; the LORD of Hosts is his name: and the Holy One of Yisra'el is your Redeemer; the God of the whole eretz shall he be called.
5 For your Maker is your bridegroom, his name, God-of-the-Angel-Armies! Your Redeemer is The Holy of Israel, known as God of the whole earth.
6 For the LORD has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, even a wife of youth, when she is cast off, says your God.
6 You were like an abandoned wife, devastated with grief, and God welcomed you back, Like a woman married young and then left," says your God.
7 For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you.
7 Your Redeemer God says: "I left you, but only for a moment. Now, with enormous compassion, I'm bringing you back.
8 In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting lovingkindness will I have mercy on you, says the LORD your Redeemer.
8 In an outburst of anger I turned my back on you - but only for a moment. It's with lasting love that I'm tenderly caring for you.
9 For this is [as] the waters of Noach to me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noach shall no more go over the eretz, so have I sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.
9 "This exile is just like the days of Noah for me: I promised then that the waters of Noah would never again flood the earth. I'm promising now no more anger, no more dressing you down.
10 For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my lovingkindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of shalom be removed, says the LORD who has mercy on you.
10 For even if the mountains walk away and the hills fall to pieces, My love won't walk away from you, my covenant commitment of peace won't fall apart." The God who has compassion on you says so.
11 you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.
11 "Afflicted city, storm-battered, unpitied: I'm about to rebuild you with stones of turquoise, Lay your foundations with sapphires,
12 I will make your pinnacles of rubies, and your gates of emeralds, and all your border of precious stones.
12 construct your towers with rubies, Your gates with jewels, and all your walls with precious stones.
13 All your children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the shalom of your children.
13 All your children will have God for their teacher - what a mentor for your children!
14 In righteousness shall you be established: you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not be afraid; and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
14 You'll be built solid, grounded in righteousness, far from any trouble - nothing to fear! far from terror - it won't even come close!
15 Behold, they may gather together, but not by me: whoever shall gather together against you shall fall because of you.
15 If anyone attacks you, don't for a moment suppose that I sent them, And if any should attack, nothing will come of it.
16 Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals, and brings forth a weapon for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
16 I create the blacksmith who fires up his forge and makes a weapon designed to kill. I also create the destroyer -
17 No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me, says the LORD.
17 But no weapon that can hurt you has ever been forged. Any accuser who takes you to court will be dismissed as a liar. This is what God's servants can expect. I'll see to it that everything works out for the best." God's Decree.
