James 2:1-12

ASV 1 My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons. NIV 1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. ASV 2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing; NIV 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. ASV 3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool; NIV 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” ASV 4 Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? NIV 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? ASV 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world [to be] rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? NIV 5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? ASV 6 But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats? NIV 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? ASV 7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called? NIV 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong? ASV 8 Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: NIV 8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. ASV 9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. NIV 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. ASV 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one [point], he is become guilty of all. NIV 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. ASV 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law. NIV 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. ASV 12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty. NIV 12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,
