James 2:1-13

ESV 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. NIV 1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. ESV 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, NIV 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. ESV 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "You sit here in a good place,"while you say to the poor man, "You stand over there," or, "Sit down at my feet," NIV 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” ESV 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? NIV 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? ESV 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? NIV 5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? ESV 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? NIV 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? ESV 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? NIV 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong? ESV 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well. NIV 8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. ESV 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. NIV 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. ESV 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. NIV 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. ESV 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. NIV 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. ESV 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. NIV 12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, ESV 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. NIV 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
