James 3:13-18

CEB 13 Are any of you wise and understanding? Show that your actions are good with a humble lifestyle that comes from wisdom. NRS 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. CEB 14 However, if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, then stop bragging and living in ways that deny the truth. NRS 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. CEB 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above. Instead, it is from the earth, natural and demonic. NRS 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. CEB 16 Wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and everything that is evil. NRS 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. CEB 17 What of the wisdom from above? First, it is pure, and then peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good actions, fair, and genuine. NRS 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. CEB 18 Those who make peace sow the seeds of justice by their peaceful acts. NRS 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

James 4:1-8

CEB 1 What is the source of conflict among you? What is the source of your disputes? Don't they come from your cravings that are at war in your own lives? NRS 1 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? CEB 2 You long for something you don't have, so you commit murder. You are jealous for something you can't get, so you struggle and fight. You don't have because you don't ask. NRS 2 You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. CEB 3 You ask and don't have because you ask with evil intentions, to waste it on your own cravings. NRS 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. CEB 4 You unfaithful people! Don't you know that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? NRS 4 Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. CEB 5 Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn't God long for our faithfulness in the life he has given to us? NRS 5 Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that the scripture says, "God yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made to dwell in us"? CEB 6 But he gives us more grace. This is why it says, God stands against the proud, but favors the humble. NRS 6 But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." CEB 7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. NRS 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. CEB 8 Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. NRS 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
