GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? Do they not come even from your lusts that war in your members?
1
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Aren't they caused by the selfish desires that fight to control you?
2 Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain. Ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
2
You want what you don't have, so you commit murder. You're determined to have things, but you can't get what you want. You quarrel and fight. You don't have the things you want, because you don't pray for them.
3 Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
3
When you pray for things, you don't get them because you want them for the wrong reason--for your own pleasure.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
4
You unfaithful people! Don't you know that love for this [evil] world is hatred toward God? Whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, "The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy"?
5
Do you think this passage means nothing? It says, "The Spirit that lives in us wants us to be his own."
6 But He giveth more grace; therefore He saith, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
6
But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, "God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people."
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
7
So place yourselves under God's authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.
8
Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters.
9 Be afflicted and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
9
Be miserable, mourn, and cry. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into gloom.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.
10
Humble yourselves in the Lord's presence. Then he will give you a high position.
11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
11
Brothers and sisters, stop slandering each other. Those who slander and judge other believers slander and judge God's teachings. If you judge God's teachings, you are no longer following them. Instead, you are judging them.
12 There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. Who art thou that judgest another?
12
There is only one teacher and judge. He is able to save or destroy you. So who are you to judge your neighbor?
13 Come now, ye that say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city and continue there a year, and buy and sell and get gain";
13
Pay attention to this! You're saying, "Today or tomorrow we will go into some city, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money."
14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
14
You don't know what will happen tomorrow. What is life? You are a mist that is seen for a moment and then disappears.
15 Instead ye ought to say, "If the Lord will, we shall live and do this or that."
15
Instead, you should say, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans."
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings. All such rejoicing is evil.
16
However, you brag because you're arrogant. All such bragging is evil.
17 Therefore to him that knoweth how to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
17
Whoever knows what is right but doesn't do it is sinning.
