James 5:1-19

GNTA 1 And now, you rich people, listen to me! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you! NIV 1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. GNTA 2 Your riches have rotted away, and your clothes have been eaten by moths. NIV 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. GNTA 3 Your gold and silver are covered with rust, and this rust will be a witness against you and will eat up your flesh like fire. You have piled up riches in these last days. NIV 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. GNTA 4 You have not paid any wages to those who work in your fields. Listen to their complaints! The cries of those who gather in your crops have reached the ears of God, the Lord Almighty. NIV 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. GNTA 5 Your life here on earth has been full of luxury and pleasure. You have made yourselves fat for the day of slaughter. NIV 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. GNTA 6 You have condemned and murdered innocent people, and they do not resist you. NIV 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you. GNTA 7 Be patient, then, my friends, until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains. NIV 7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. GNTA 8 You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord's coming is near. NIV 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. GNTA 9 Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The Judge is near, ready to appear. NIV 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! GNTA 10 My friends, remember the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Take them as examples of patient endurance under suffering. NIV 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. GNTA 11 We call them happy because they endured. You have heard of Job's patience, and you know how the Lord provided for him in the end. For the Lord is full of mercy and compassion. NIV 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. GNTA 12 Above all, my friends, do not use an oath when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Say only "Yes" when you mean yes, and "No" when you mean no, and then you will not come under God's judgment. NIV 12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned. GNTA 13 Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises. NIV 13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. GNTA 14 Are any among you sick? They should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord. NIV 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. GNTA 15 This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven. NIV 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. GNTA 16 So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect. NIV 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. GNTA 17 Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years. NIV 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. GNTA 18 Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops. NIV 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. GNTA 19 My friends, if any of you wander away from the truth and another one brings you back again, NIV 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,
