1 El Señor<br /> le dio a Jeremías un mensaje después que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, lo dejó libre en Ramá. Este había encontrado a Jeremías atado con cadenas entre todos los demás cautivos de Jerusalén y de Judá que estaban siendo desterrados a Babilonia.

2 El capitán de la guardia mandó llamar a Jeremías y le dijo: «El Señor<br /> tu Dios trajo desastre a esta tierra

3 tal como dijo que haría, pues este pueblo ha pecado contra el Señor<br /> y lo desobedeció. Por eso ocurrió.

4 Ahora voy a quitarte estas cadenas y a dejarte libre. Si quieres venir conmigo a Babilonia, eres bienvenido. Me ocuparé de que seas tratado bien, pero si no quieres venir, puedes quedarte aquí. Toda la tierra está ante ti, puedes irte a donde quieras.

5 Si decides quedarte, regresa a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam y nieto de Safán. Él fue nombrado gobernador de Judá por el rey de Babilonia. Quédate allí con la gente que él gobierna, pero eso depende de ti. Puedes irte a donde quieras».<br />Entonces Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, le dio a Jeremías algo de comida y dinero y lo dejó ir.

6 Entonces, Jeremías regresó a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, en Mizpa, y vivió en Judá con los pocos que se quedaron en la tierra.

7 Gedalías gobierna en Judá<br />Los líderes de los grupos guerrilleros judíos que estaban en el campo oyeron que el rey de Babilonia había nombrado a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, gobernador sobre las personas pobres que fueron dejadas en Judá, es decir los hombres, las mujeres y los niños que no habían sido desterrados a Babilonia.

8 Así que fueron a ver a Gedalías a Mizpa. El grupo incluía a: Ismael, hijo de Netanías; Johanán y Jonatán, hijos de Carea; Seraías, hijo de Tanhumet; los hijos de Efai el netofatita; Jezanías, hijo del maacateo, y todos sus hombres.

9 Gedalías les juró que los babilonios<br /> no querían hacerles ningún daño. «No tengan miedo de servirles. Vivan en la tierra y sirvan al rey de Babilonia, y todo les irá bien —les prometió—.

10 En cuanto a mí, permaneceré en Mizpa para representarlos a ustedes ante los babilonios cuando vengan a reunirse con nosotros. Establézcanse en las ciudades que han tomado y vivan de la tierra. Cosechen las uvas, los frutos de verano y los olivos, y almacénenlos».

11 Cuando los judíos que se encontraban en Moab, Amón, Edom y en los otros países cercanos oyeron que el rey de Babilonia había dejado un puñado de gente en Judá y que Gedalías era el gobernador,

12 comenzaron a regresar a Judá de los lugares adonde habían huido. Se detuvieron en Mizpa para encontrarse con Gedalías y luego se fueron a los campos de Judá para recoger una gran cosecha de uvas y de otros cultivos.

13 Complot contra Gedalías<br />Poco tiempo después, Johanán, hijo de Carea, y los otros líderes guerrilleros fueron a ver a Gedalías en Mizpa.

14 Le dijeron: «¿Sabías que Baalis, rey de Amón, ha enviado a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, para asesinarte?», pero Gedalías se negó a creerles.

15 Más adelante Johanán habló con Gedalías en privado y se ofreció para matar a Ismael en forma secreta.<br />—¿Por qué deberíamos permitir que venga y te mate? —preguntó Johanán—. ¿Qué les sucederá entonces a los judíos que regresaron? ¿Por qué los pocos que quedamos deberíamos terminar esparcidos y perdidos?

16 Pero Gedalías le dijo a Johanán:<br />—Te prohíbo que hagas semejante cosa ya que mientes en cuanto a Ismael.

1 The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.

2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The LORD your God decreed this disaster for this place.

3 And now the LORD has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the LORD and did not obey him.

4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.”

5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.” Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go.

6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.

7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon,

8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men.

9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians, ” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.

10 I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.”

11 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them,

12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.

13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

14 and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

15 Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, “Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?”

16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”
