Jeremiah 32

HNV

MSG

1 The word that came to Yirmeyahu from the LORD in the tenth year of Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah, which was the eighteenth year of Nevukhadretztzar.
1 The Message Jeremiah received from God in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah. It was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
2 Now at that time the king of Bavel's army was besieging Yerushalayim; and Yirmeyahu the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Yehudah's house.
2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon was holding Jerusalem under siege. Jeremiah was shut up in jail in the royal palace.
3 For Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah had shut him up, saying, Why do you prophesy, and say, Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Bavel, and he shall take it;
3 Zedekiah, king of Judah, had locked him up, complaining, "How dare you preach, saying, 'God says, I'm warning you: I will hand this city over to the king of Babylon and he will take it over.
4 and Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah shall not escape out of the hand of the Kasdim, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Bavel, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall see his eyes;
4 Zedekiah king of Judah will be handed over to the Chaldeans right along with the city. He will be handed over to the king of Babylon and forced to face the music.
5 and he shall bring Tzidkiyahu to Bavel, and there shall he be until I visit him, says the LORD: though you fight with the Kasdim, you shall not prosper?
5 He'll be hauled off to Babylon where he'll stay until I deal with him. God's Decree. Fight against the Babylonians all you want - it won't get you anywhere.'"
6 Yirmeyahu said, The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
6 Jeremiah said, "God's Message came to me like this:
7 Behold, Hanam'el the son of Shallum your uncle shall come to you, saying, Buy you my field that is in `Anatot; for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.
7 Prepare yourself! Hanamel, your uncle Shallum's son, is on his way to see you. He is going to say, 'Buy my field in Anathoth. You have the legal right to buy it.'
8 So Hanam'el my uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of the LORD, and said to me, Please buy my field that is in `Anatot, which is in the land of Binyamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
8 "And sure enough, just as God had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me while I was in jail and said, 'Buy my field in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin, for you have the legal right to keep it in the family. Buy it. Take it over.' "That did it. I knew it was God's Message.
9 I bought the field that was in `Anatot of Hanam'el my uncle's son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
9 "So I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I paid him seventeen silver shekels.
10 I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.
10 I followed all the proper procedures: In the presence of witnesses I wrote out the bill of sale, sealed it, and weighed out the money on the scales.
11 So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open;
11 Then I took the deed of purchase - the sealed copy that contained the contract and its conditions and also the open copy -
12 and I delivered the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyah, the son of Mechaseyah, in the presence of Hanam'el my uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses who subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Yehudim who sat in the court of the guard.
12 and gave them to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah. All this took place in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and the witnesses who had signed the deed, as the Jews who were at the jail that day looked on.
13 I charged Barukh before them, saying,
13 "Then, in front of all of them, I told Baruch,
14 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days.
14 'These are orders from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel: Take these documents - both the sealed and the open deeds - and put them for safekeeping in a pottery jar.
15 For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land.
15 For God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel, says, "Life is going to return to normal. Homes and fields and vineyards are again going to be bought in this country."'
16 Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyah, I prayed to the LORD, saying,
16 "And then, having handed over the legal documents to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to God,
17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, you have made the heavens and the eretz by your great power and by your outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for you,
17 'Dear God, my Master, you created earth and sky by your great power - by merely stretching out your arm! There is nothing you can't do.
18 who show lovingkindness to thousands, and recompense the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them; the great, the mighty God, the LORD of Hosts is his name;
18 You're loyal in your steadfast love to thousands upon thousands - but you also make children live with the fallout from their parents' sins. Great and powerful God, named God-of-the-Angel-Armies,
19 great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open on all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
19 determined in purpose and relentless in following through, you see everything that men and women do and respond appropriately to the way they live, to the things they do.
20 who did set signs and wonders in the land of Mitzrayim, even to this day, both in Yisra'el and among [other] men; and mad you a name, as at this day;
20 "'You performed signs and wonders in the country of Egypt and continue to do so right into the present, right here in Israel and everywhere else, too. You've made a reputation for yourself that doesn't diminish.
21 and did bring forth your people Yisra'el out of the land of Mitzrayim with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;
21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders - a powerful deliverance! - by merely stretching out your arm.
22 and gave them this land, which you did swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;
22 You gave them this land and solemnly promised to their ancestors a bountiful and fertile land.
23 and they came in, and possessed it, but they didn't obey your voice, neither walked in your law; they have done nothing of all that you commanded them to do: therefore you have caused all this evil to come on them.
23 But when they entered the land and took it over, they didn't listen to you. They didn't do what you commanded. They wouldn't listen to a thing you told them. And so you brought this disaster on them.
24 Behold, the mounds, they are come to the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim who fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what you have spoken has happened; and, behold, you see it.
24 "'Oh, look at the siege ramps already set in place to take the city. Killing and starvation and disease are on our doorstep. The Babylonians are attacking! The Word you spoke is coming to pass - it's daily news!
25 You have said to me, Lord GOD, Buy you the field for money, and call witnesses; whereas the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim.
25 And yet you, God, the Master, even though it is certain that the city will be turned over to the Babylonians, also told me, Buy the field. Pay for it in cash. And make sure there are witnesses.'"
26 Then came the word of the LORD to Yirmeyahu, saying,
26 Then God's Message came again to Jeremiah:
27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?
27 "Stay alert! I am God, the God of everything living. Is there anything I can't do?
28 Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Kasdim, and into the hand of Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel, and he shall take it:
28 So listen to God's Message: No doubt about it, I'm handing this city over to the Babylonians and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He'll take it.
29 and the Kasdim, who fight against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses, on whose roofs they have offered incense to Ba`al, and poured out drink-offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.
29 The attacking Chaldeans will break through and burn the city down: All those houses whose roofs were used as altars for offerings to Baal and the worship of who knows how many other gods provoked me.
30 For the children of Yisra'el and the children of Yehudah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Yisra'el have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, says the LORD.
30 It isn't as if this were the first time they had provoked me. The people of Israel and Judah have been doing this for a long time - doing what I hate, making me angry by the way they live." God's Decree.
31 For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even to this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
31 "This city has made me angry from the day they built it, and now I've had my fill. I'm destroying it. I can't stand to look any longer
32 because of all the evil of the children of Yisra'el and of the children of Yehudah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their Kohanim, and their prophets, and the men of Yehudah, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
32 at the wicked lives of the people of Israel and Judah, deliberately making me angry, the whole lot of them - kings and leaders and priests and preachers, in the country and in the city.
33 They have turned to me the back, and not the face: and though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction.
33 They've turned their backs on me - won't even look me in the face! - even though I took great pains to teach them how to live. They refused to listen, refused to be taught.
34 But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.
34 Why, they even set up obscene god and goddess statues in the Temple built in my honor - an outrageous desecration!
35 They built the high places of Ba`al, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through [the fire] to Molekh; which I didn't command them, neither did it come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Yehudah to sin.
35 And then they went out and built shrines to the god Baal in the valley of Hinnom, where they burned their children in sacrifice to the god Molech - I can hardly conceive of such evil! - turning the whole country into one huge act of sin.
36 Now therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, concerning this city, whereof you say, It is given into the hand of the king of Bavel by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence:
36 "But there is also this Message from me, the God of Israel, to this city of which you have said, 'In killing and starvation and disease this city will be delivered up to the king of Babylon':
37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, where I have driven them in my anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:
37 "'Watch for this! I will collect them from all the countries to which I will have driven them in my anger and rage and indignation. Yes, I'll bring them all back to this place and let them live here in peace.
38 and they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
38 They will be my people, I will be their God.
39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
39 I'll make them of one mind and heart, always honoring me, so that they can live good and whole lives, they and their children after them.
40 and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.
40 What's more, I'll make a covenant with them that will last forever, a covenant to stick with them no matter what, and work for their good. I'll fill their hearts with a deep respect for me so they'll not even think of turning away from me.
41 Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.
41 "'Oh how I'll rejoice in them! Oh how I'll delight in doing good things for them! Heart and soul, I'll plant them in this country and keep them here!'
42 For thus says the LORD: Like as I have brought all this great evil on this people, so will I bring on them all the good that I have promised them.
42 "Yes, this is God's Message: 'I will certainly bring this huge catastrophe on this people, but I will also usher in a wonderful life of prosperity. I promise.
43 Fields shall be bought in this land, whereof you say, It is desolate, without man or animal; it is given into the hand of the Kasdim.
43 Fields are going to be bought here again, yes, in this very country that you assume is going to end up desolate - gone to the dogs, unlivable, wrecked by the Babylonians.
44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Binyamin, and in the places about Yerushalayim, and in the cities of Yehudah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South: for I will cause their captivity to return, says the LORD.
44 Yes, people will buy farms again, and legally, with deeds of purchase, sealed documents, proper witnesses - and right here in the territory of Benjamin, and in the area around Jerusalem, around the villages of Judah and the hill country, the Shephelah and the Negev. I will restore everything that was lost.' God's Decree."
