1 Jeremías compra un terreno<br />Jeremías recibió el siguiente mensaje del Señor<br /> en el décimo año del reinado de Sedequías,<br /> rey de Judá. También era el año dieciocho del reinado de Nabucodonosor.

2 Para entonces, Jerusalén estaba sitiada por el ejército babilónico y Jeremías estaba preso en el patio de la guardia del palacio real.

3 El rey Sedequías lo había puesto allí, y preguntaba por qué Jeremías seguía dando esta profecía: «Esto dice el Señor<br />: “Estoy a punto de entregar esta ciudad al rey de Babilonia, y él la tomará.

4 El rey Sedequías será capturado por los babilonios<br /> y llevado a encontrarse cara a cara con el rey de Babilonia.

5 Él llevará a Sedequías a Babilonia y allí me ocuparé de él —dice el Señor<br />—. Si ustedes pelean contra los babilonios, no vencerán”».

6 En ese tiempo el Señor<br /> me envió un mensaje. Me dijo:

7 «Tu primo Hanameel, hijo de Salum, vendrá y te dirá: “Compra mi terreno en Anatot. Por ley tienes derecho a comprarlo antes de que lo ofrezca a algún otro”».

8 Entonces, así como el Señor<br /> dijo que haría, mi primo Hanameel vino y me visitó en la cárcel. Me dijo: «Por favor, compra mi terreno en Anatot en la tierra de Benjamín. Por ley tienes el derecho de comprarlo antes de que lo ofrezca a algún otro, así que cómpralo para ti». Entonces supe que el mensaje que había oído era del Señor<br />.

9 Así que compré el terreno en Anatot pagándole a Hanameel diecisiete piezas<br /> de plata.

10 Firmé y sellé la escritura de compra delante de testigos, pesé la plata y le pagué.

11 Entonces tomé la escritura sellada y una copia de la escritura no sellada con los términos y condiciones de la compra,

12 y se las di a Baruc, hijo de Nerías y nieto de Maaseías. Hice todo esto en presencia de mi primo Hanameel, de los testigos que firmaron la escritura y de todos los hombres de Judá que estaban allí en el patio de la guardia.

13 Entonces le dije a Baruc mientras todos escuchaban:

14 «Esto dice el Señor<br /> de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: “Toma tanto la escritura sellada como la copia no sellada y ponlas en una vasija de barro para preservarlas por largo tiempo”.

15 Pues esto dice el Señor<br /> de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: “Algún día de nuevo habrá dueños de estos terrenos que comprarán y venderán casas, viñedos y campos”».

16 Oración de Jeremías<br />Después que le di los documentos a Baruc, oré al Señor<br />:

17 «¡Oh Señor<br /> Soberano! Hiciste los cielos y la tierra con tu mano fuerte y tu brazo poderoso. ¡Nada es demasiado difícil para ti!

18 Muestras un amor inagotable a miles, pero también haces recaer las consecuencias del pecado de una generación sobre la siguiente. Tú eres el Dios grande y poderoso, el Señor<br /> de los Ejércitos Celestiales.

19 Tú posees toda la sabiduría y haces grandes y maravillosos milagros. Ves la conducta de todas las personas y les das lo que se merecen.

20 Realizaste señales milagrosas y maravillas en la tierra de Egipto, ¡cosas que se recuerdan hasta el día de hoy! Y sigues haciendo grandes milagros en Israel y en todo el mundo. Así has hecho que tu nombre sea famoso hasta el día de hoy.

21 »Tú sacaste a Israel de Egipto con señales poderosas y maravillas, con mano fuerte y brazo poderoso, y con un terror aplastante.

22 Le diste al pueblo de Israel esta tierra que habías prometido hace mucho tiempo a sus antepasados, tierra donde fluyen la leche y la miel.

23 Nuestros antepasados vinieron, la conquistaron y vivieron en ella, pero rehusaron obedecerte o seguir tu palabra. No hicieron nada de lo que les ordenaste. Por eso enviaste este terrible desastre sobre ellos.

24 »¡Miren cómo han construido rampas de asalto contra las murallas de la ciudad! Por medio de guerra, hambre y enfermedad la ciudad será entregada a los babilonios, que la conquistarán. Todo ha sucedido tal como lo dijiste.

25 Y aun así, oh Señor<br /> Soberano, me has ordenado comprar el terreno —hasta pagué mucho dinero en presencia de estos testigos— aunque la ciudad pronto será entregada a los babilonios».

26 Predicción de la caída de Jerusalén<br />Después Jeremías recibió el siguiente mensaje del Señor<br />:

27 «Yo soy el Señor<br />, Dios de todos los pueblos del mundo. ¿Hay algo demasiado difícil para mí?

28 Por lo tanto, esto dice el Señor<br />: entregaré esta ciudad a los babilonios y a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él la conquistará.

29 Los babilonios que están fuera de las murallas entrarán y prenderán fuego a la ciudad. Quemarán por completo todas estas casas, donde el pueblo provocó mi enojo al quemar incienso a Baal en las azoteas y al derramar ofrendas líquidas a otros dioses.

30 Desde su comienzo Israel y Judá solo han hecho lo malo. Me han enfurecido con todas sus malas acciones —dice el Señor<br />—.

31 Desde el día que se construyó esta ciudad hasta ahora no han hecho más que enojarme, así que estoy decidido a deshacerme de ella.

32 »Los pecados de Israel y de Judá —los pecados de la gente de Jerusalén, de los reyes, de los funcionarios, de los sacerdotes y de los profetas— han provocado mi enojo.

33 Mi pueblo me ha dado la espalda y no quiere regresar. A pesar de que les he enseñado con diligencia, no aceptaron la instrucción ni obedecieron.

34 Levantaron sus ídolos abominables justo en mi propio templo, y así lo profanaron.

35 Edificaron santuarios paganos a Baal en el valle de Ben-hinom y allí sacrifican a sus hijos e hijas a Moloc. Jamás ordené un acto tan horrendo; ¡ni siquiera me pasó por la mente ordenar semejante cosa! ¡Qué maldad tan increíble la que hizo que Judá pecara tanto!

36 Promesa de restauración<br />»Ahora quiero decir algo más acerca de esta ciudad. Ustedes han estado diciendo: “La ciudad caerá ante el rey de Babilonia por guerra, hambre y enfermedad”; pero esto dice el Señor<br />, Dios de Israel:

37 ciertamente traeré de regreso a mi pueblo de todos los países adonde lo esparcí en mi furor. Lo traeré de regreso a esta misma ciudad para que viva en paz y seguridad.

38 Ellos serán mi pueblo y yo seré su Dios.

39 Les daré un solo corazón y un solo propósito: adorarme para siempre para su propio bien y el bien de todos sus descendientes.

40 Y haré un pacto eterno con ellos: nunca dejaré de hacerles bien. Pondré en el corazón de ellos el deseo de adorarme, y nunca me dejarán.

41 Me gozaré en hacerles bien, y con fidelidad y de todo corazón los volveré a plantar en esta tierra.

42 »Esto dice el Señor<br />: así como traje todas estas calamidades sobre ellos, así haré todo el bien que les he prometido.

43 Se volverán a comprar y a vender terrenos en esta tierra de la que ahora ustedes dicen: “Ha sido arrasada por los babilonios, es una tierra desolada de donde la gente y los animales han desaparecido”.

44 Es cierto, otra vez se comprarán y venderán terrenos —con escrituras firmadas y selladas frente a testigos— en la tierra de Benjamín y aquí en Jerusalén, en las ciudades de Judá y en la zona montañosa, en las colinas de Judá<br /> y también en el Neguev. Pues algún día les devolveré la prosperidad. ¡Yo, el Señor<br />, he hablado!».

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah.

3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.

4 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape the Babylonians but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes.

5 He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’ ”

6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the LORD came to me:

7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.’

8 “Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’ “I knew that this was the word of the LORD;

9 so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver.

10 I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales.

11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy—

12 and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions:

14 ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.

15 For this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’

16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:

17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

18 You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty,

19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.

20 You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours.

21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror.

22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.

23 They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster on them.

24 “See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague, the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said has happened, as you now see.

25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign LORD, say to me, ‘Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.’ ”

26 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

27 “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?

28 Therefore this is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it.

29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.

30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger with what their hands have made, declares the LORD.

31 From the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove it from my sight.

32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done—they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem.

33 They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.

34 They set up their vile images in the house that bears my Name and defiled it.

35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek, though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind—that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin.

36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

37 I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.

38 They will be my people, and I will be their God.

39 I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them.

40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.

41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.

42 “This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them.

43 Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’

44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD.”
