Job 17

MSG 1 "My spirit is broken, my days used up, my grave dug and waiting. NIV 1 My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me. MSG 2 See how these mockers close in on me? How long do I have to put up with their insolence? NIV 2 Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility. MSG 3 "O God, pledge your support for me. Give it to me in writing, with your signature. You're the only one who can do it! NIV 3 “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me? MSG 4 These people are so useless! You know firsthand how stupid they can be. You wouldn't let them have the last word, would you? NIV 4 You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph. MSG 5 Those who betray their own friends leave a legacy of abuse to their children. NIV 5 If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail. MSG 6 "God, you've made me the talk of the town - people spit in my face; NIV 6 “God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit. MSG 7 I can hardly see from crying so much; I'm nothing but skin and bones. NIV 7 My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow. MSG 8 Decent people can't believe what they're seeing; the good-hearted wake up and insist I've given up on God. NIV 8 The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly. MSG 9 "But principled people hold tight, keep a firm grip on life, sure that their clean, pure hands will get stronger and stronger! NIV 9 Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger. MSG 10 "Maybe you'd all like to start over, to try it again, the bunch of you. So far I haven't come across one scrap of wisdom in anything you've said. NIV 10 “But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you. MSG 11 My life's about over. All my plans are smashed, all my hopes are snuffed out - NIV 11 My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart MSG 12 My hope that night would turn into day, my hope that dawn was about to break. NIV 12 turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near. MSG 13 If all I have to look forward to is a home in the graveyard, if my only hope for comfort is a well-built coffin, NIV 13 If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness, MSG 14 If a family reunion means going six feet under, and the only family that shows up is worms, NIV 14 if I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’ MSG 15 Do you call that hope? Who on earth could find any hope in that? NIV 15 where then is my hope— who can see any hope for me? MSG 16 No. If hope and I are to be buried together, I suppose you'll all come to the double funeral!" NIV 16 Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?”
