Job 18

GW

NKJV

1 Then Bildad from Shuah replied [to Job],
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:
2 "How long before your words will end? Think it through, and then we'll talk.
2 "How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak.
3 Why do you think of us as cattle? Why are we considered stupid in your eyes?
3 Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight?
4 Why do you rip yourself apart in anger? Should the earth be abandoned for your sake or a boulder be dislodged?
4 You who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place?
5 "Indeed, the light of the wicked is snuffed out. The flame of his fire stops glowing.
5 "The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine.
6 The light in his tent becomes dark, and the lamp above him is snuffed out.
6 The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out.
7 "His healthy stride is shortened, and his own planning trips him up.
7 The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down.
8 His own feet get him tangled in a net as he walks around on its webbing.
8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare.
9 A trap catches his heel. A snare holds him.
9 The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him.
10 A rope is hidden on the ground for him. A trap is on his path [to catch] him.
10 A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road.
11 "Terrors suddenly pounce on him from every side and chase him every step he takes.
11 Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet.
12 Hunger undermines his strength. Disaster is waiting beside him.
12 His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side.
13 His skin is eaten away by disease. Death's firstborn son eats away at the limbs of his body.
13 It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs.
14 He is dragged from the safety of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.
14 He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors.
15 Fire lives in his tent. Sulfur is scattered over his home.
15 They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling.
16 His roots dry up under him. His branches wither over him.
16 His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above.
17 All memory about him will vanish from the earth, and his reputation will not be known on the street corner.
17 The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned.
18 He will be driven from the light into the dark and chased out of the world.
18 He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world.
19 He will not have any children or descendants among his people or any survivor where he used to live.
19 He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings.
20 People in the west are shocked by what happens to him. People in the east are seized with horror.
20 Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened.
21 This is what happens to the homes of wicked people and to those who do not know God."
21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God."
