Job 28

CEB

MSG

1 There is a sure source of silver, a place where gold is refined.
1 "We all know how silver seams the rocks, we've seen the stuff from which gold is refined,
2 Iron is taken from the earth; rock is smelted into copper.
2 We're aware of how iron is dug out of the ground and copper is smelted from rock.
3 Humans put an end to darkness, dig for ore to the farthest depths, into stone in utter darkness,
3 Miners penetrate the earth's darkness, searching the roots of the mountains for ore, digging away in the suffocating darkness.
4 open a shaft away from any inhabitant, places forgotten by those on foot, apart from any human they hang and sway.
4 Far from civilization, far from the traffic, they cut a shaft, and are lowered into it by ropes.
5 Earth—from it comes food— is turned over below ground as by fire.
5 Earth's surface is a field for grain, but its depths are a forge
6 Its rocks are the source for lapis lazuli; there is gold dust in it.
6 Firing sapphires from stones and chiseling gold from rocks.
7 A path— no bird of prey knows it; a hawk's eye hasn't seen it;
7 Vultures are blind to its riches, hawks never lay eyes on it.
8 proud beasts haven't trodden on it; a lion hasn't crossed over it.
8 Wild animals are oblivious to it, lions don't know it's there.
9 Humans thrust their hands into flint, pull up mountains from their roots,
9 Miners hammer away at the rock, they uproot the mountains.
10 cut channels into rocks; their eyes see everything precious.
10 They tunnel through the rock and find all kinds of beautiful gems.
11 They dam up the sources of rivers; hidden things come to light.
11 They discover the origins of rivers, and bring earth's secrets to light.
12 But wisdom, where can it be found; where is the place of understanding?
12 "But where, oh where, will they find Wisdom? Where does Insight hide?
13 Humankind doesn't know its value; it isn't found in the land of the living.
13 Mortals don't have a clue, haven't the slightest idea where to look.
14 The Deep says, "It's not with me"; the Sea says, "Not alongside me!"
14 Earth's depths say, 'It's not here'; ocean deeps echo, 'Never heard of it.'
15 It can't be bought with gold; its price can't be measured in silver,
15 It can't be bought with the finest gold; no amount of silver can get it.
16 can't be weighed against gold from Ophir, with precious onyx or lapis lazuli.
16 Even famous Ophir gold can't buy it, not even diamonds and sapphires.
17 Neither gold nor glass can compare with it; she can't be acquired with gold jewelry.
17 Neither gold nor emeralds are comparable; extravagant jewelry can't touch it.
18 Coral and jasper shouldn't be mentioned; the price of wisdom is more than rubies.
18 Pearl necklaces and ruby bracelets - why bother? None of this is even a down payment on Wisdom!
19 Cushite topaz won't compare with her; she can't be set alongside pure gold.
19 Pile gold and African diamonds as high as you will, they can't hold a candle to Wisdom.
20 But wisdom, where does she come from? Where is the place of understanding?
20 "So where does Wisdom come from? And where does Insight live?
21 She's hidden from the eyes of all the living, concealed from birds of the sky.
21 It can't be found by looking, no matter how deep you dig, no matter how high you fly.
22 Destruction and Death have said, "We've heard a report of her."
22 If you search through the graveyard and question the dead, they say, 'We've only heard rumors of it.'
23 God understands her way; he knows her place;
23 "God alone knows the way to Wisdom, he knows the exact place to find it.
24 for he looks to the ends of the earth and surveys everything beneath the heavens.
24 He knows where everything is on earth, he sees everything under heaven.
25 In order to weigh the wind, to prepare a measure for waters,
25 After he commanded the winds to blow and measured out the waters,
26 when he made a decree for the rain, a path for thunderbolts,
26 Arranged for the rain and set off explosions of thunder and lightning,
27 then he observed it, spoke of it, established it, searched it out,
27 He focused on Wisdom, made sure it was all set and tested and ready.
28 and said to humankind: "Look, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; turning from evil is understanding."
28 Then he addressed the human race: 'Here it is! Fear-of-the-Lord - that's Wisdom, and Insight means shunning evil.'"
