Job 33

LXX

1 Howbeit hear, Job, my words, and hearken to my speech.
1 "But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words.
2 For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken.
2 See, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks.
3 My heart pure by words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity.
3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely.
4 The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.
4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If thou canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I against thee.
5 Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand.
6 Thou art formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same .
6 See, before God I am as you are; I too was formed from a piece of clay.
7 My fear shall not terrify thee, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
7 No fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy on you.
8 But thou hast said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of thy words;) because thou sayest, I am pure, not having sinned;
8 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words.
9 I am blameless, for I have not transgressed.
9 You say, "I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me.
10 Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary.
10 Look, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy;
11 And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways.
11 he puts my feet in the stocks, and watches all my paths.'
12 For how sayest thou, I am righteous, yet he has not hearkened to me? for he that is above mortals is eternal.
12 "But in this you are not right. I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal.
13 But thou sayest, Why has he not heard every word of my cause?
13 Why do you contend against him, saying, "He will answer none of my words'?
14 For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time,
14 For God speaks in one way, and in two, though people do not perceive it.
15 a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on mortals, while they slumber on their beds,
16 then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions:
16 then he opens their ears, and terrifies them with warnings,
17 to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall.
17 that he may turn them aside from their deeds, and keep them from pride,
18 He spares also his soul from death, and him not to fall in war.
18 to spare their souls from the Pit, their lives from traversing the River.
19 And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.
19 They are also chastened with pain upon their beds, and with continual strife in their bones,
20 And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat;
20 so that their lives loathe bread, and their appetites dainty food.
21 until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall shew his bones bare.
21 Their flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and their bones, once invisible, now stick out.
22 His soul also draws nigh to death, and his life is in Hades.
22 Their souls draw near the Pit, and their lives to those who bring death.
23 Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;
23 Then, if there should be for one of them an angel, a mediator, one of a thousand, one who declares a person upright,
24 he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with morrow.
24 and he is gracious to that person, and says, "Deliver him from going down into the Pit; I have found a ransom;
25 And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in full strength.
25 let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor';
26 And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression : for he will render to men due.
26 then he prays to God, and is accepted by him, he comes into his presence with joy, and God repays him for his righteousness.
27 Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.
27 That person sings to others and says, "I sinned, and perverted what was right, and it was not paid back to me.
28 Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.
28 He has redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and my life shall see the light.'
29 Behold, all these things, the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.
29 "God indeed does all these things, twice, three times, with mortals,
30 And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light.
30 to bring back their souls from the Pit, so that they may see the light of life.
31 Hearken, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak.
31 Pay heed, Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 If thou hast words, answer me: speak, for I desire thee to be justified.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, do thou hear me: be silent, and I will teach thee.
33 If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."
