Job 38

GNT 1 Then out of the storm the Lord spoke to Job. NIV 1 Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: GNT 2 Who are you to question my wisdom with your ignorant, empty words? NIV 2 “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? GNT 3 Now stand up straight and answer the questions I ask you. NIV 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. GNT 4 Were you there when I made the world? If you know so much, tell me about it. NIV 4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. GNT 5 Who decided how large it would be? Who stretched the measuring line over it? Do you know all the answers? NIV 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? GNT 6 What holds up the pillars that support the earth? Who laid the cornerstone of the world? NIV 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— GNT 7 In the dawn of that day the stars sang together, and the heavenly beings shouted for joy. NIV 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? GNT 8 Who closed the gates to hold back the sea when it burst from the womb of the earth? NIV 8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, GNT 9 It was I who covered the sea with clouds and wrapped it in darkness. NIV 9 when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, GNT 10 I marked a boundary for the sea and kept it behind bolted gates. NIV 10 when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, GNT 11 I told it, "So far and no farther! Here your powerful waves must stop." NIV 11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’? GNT 12 Job, have you ever in all your life commanded a day to dawn? NIV 12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, GNT 13 Have you ordered the dawn to seize the earth and shake the wicked from their hiding places? NIV 13 that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? GNT 14 Daylight makes the hills and valleys stand out like the folds of a garment, clear as the imprint of a seal on clay. NIV 14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. GNT 15 The light of day is too bright for the wicked and restrains them from doing violence. NIV 15 The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken. GNT 16 Have you been to the springs in the depths of the sea? Have you walked on the floor of the ocean? NIV 16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? GNT 17 Has anyone ever shown you the gates that guard the dark world of the dead? NIV 17 Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? GNT 18 Have you any idea how big the world is? Answer me if you know. NIV 18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. GNT 19 Do you know where the light comes from or what the source of darkness is? NIV 19 “What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? GNT 20 Can you show them how far to go, or send them back again? NIV 20 Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings? GNT 21 I am sure you can, because you're so old and were there when the world was made! NIV 21 Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years! GNT 22 Have you ever visited the storerooms, where I keep the snow and the hail? NIV 22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail, GNT 23 I keep them ready for times of trouble, for days of battle and war. NIV 23 which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle? GNT 24 Have you been to the place where the sun comes up, or the place from which the east wind blows? NIV 24 What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth? GNT 25 Who dug a channel for the pouring rain and cleared the way for the thunderstorm? NIV 25 Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, GNT 26 Who makes rain fall where no one lives? NIV 26 to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert, GNT 27 Who waters the dry and thirsty land, so that grass springs up? NIV 27 to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass? GNT 28 Does either the rain or the dew have a father? NIV 28 Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew? GNT 29 Who is the mother of the ice and the frost, NIV 29 From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens GNT 30 which turn the waters to stone and freeze the face of the sea? NIV 30 when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen? GNT 31 Can you tie the Pleiades together or loosen the bonds that hold Orion? NIV 31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? GNT 32 Can you guide the stars season by season and direct the Big and the Little Dipper? NIV 32 Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasonsor lead out the Bear with its cubs? GNT 33 Do you know the laws that govern the skies, and can you make them apply to the earth? NIV 33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth? GNT 34 Can you shout orders to the clouds and make them drench you with rain? NIV 34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? GNT 35 And if you command the lightning to flash, will it come to you and say, "At your service"? NIV 35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’? GNT 36 Who tells the ibis when the Nile will flood, or who tells the rooster that rain will fall? NIV 36 Who gives the ibis wisdomor gives the rooster understanding? GNT 37 Who is wise enough to count the clouds and tilt them over to pour out the rain, NIV 37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens GNT 38 rain that hardens the dust into lumps? NIV 38 when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together? GNT 39 Do you find food for lions to eat, and satisfy hungry young lions NIV 39 “Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions GNT 40 when they hide in their caves, or lie in wait in their dens? NIV 40 when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket? GNT 41 Who is it that feeds the ravens when they wander about hungry, when their young cry to me for food? NIV 41 Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?
