Job 4

CJB

NLT

1 Then Elifaz the Teimani spoke up:
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied to Job:
2 "If one tries to speak to you, will you mind? Yet who could keep from speaking?
2 “Will you be patient and let me say a word? For who could keep from speaking out?
3 You have given moral instruction to many, you have firmed up feeble hands,
3 “In the past you have encouraged many people; you have strengthened those who were weak.
4 your words have supported those who were stumbling, and you have strengthened the weak-kneed.
4 Your words have supported those who were falling; you encouraged those with shaky knees.
5 "But now it comes to you, and you are impatient; at the first touch, you are in shock.
5 But now when trouble strikes, you lose heart. You are terrified when it touches you.
6 Isn't your fear of God your assurance, and the integrity of your ways your hope?
6 Doesn’t your reverence for God give you confidence? Doesn’t your life of integrity give you hope?
7 "Think back: what innocent person has perished? Since when are the upright destroyed?
7 “Stop and think! Do the innocent die? When have the upright been destroyed?
8 What I see is that those who plow sin and sow trouble reap just that.
8 My experience shows that those who plant trouble and cultivate evil will harvest the same.
9 At a breath from God, they perish; at a blast from his anger, they are consumed.
9 A breath from God destroys them. They vanish in a blast of his anger.
10 The lion may growl, the king lion may roar, but that old lion's teeth are broken;
10 The lion roars and the wildcat snarls, but the teeth of strong lions will be broken.
11 so the lion succumbs from lack of prey, and the lion's cubs are scattered.
11 The fierce lion will starve for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness will be scattered.
12 "For a word was stealthily brought to me, my ear caught only a whisper of it.
12 “This truth was given to me in secret, as though whispered in my ear.
13 In passing thoughts flashing through visions at night, when sleep lies heavy on people,
13 It came to me in a disturbing vision at night, when people are in a deep sleep.
14 a shiver of horror came over me; it made all my bones tremble.
14 Fear gripped me, and my bones trembled.
15 Then a spirit passed in front of my face; the hair of my flesh stood on end.
15 A spirit swept past my face, and my hair stood on end.
16 It stood still, but I couldn't make out its appearance; yet the form stayed there before my eyes. Then I heard a subdued voice:
16 The spirit stopped, but I couldn’t see its shape. There was a form before my eyes. In the silence I heard a voice say,
17 'Can a human be seen by God as righteous? Can a mortal be pure before his maker?
17 ‘Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator?’
18 [God] doesn't trust his own servants, he finds fault even with his angels;
18 “If God does not trust his own angels and has charged his messengers with foolishness,
19 much more those living in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust. They are crushed more easily than a worm;
19 how much less will he trust people made of clay! They are made of dust, crushed as easily as a moth.
20 shattered between morning and evening; they perish forever, and no one takes notice.
20 They are alive in the morning but dead by evening, gone forever without a trace.
21 Their cord within them is pulled up; then they die, without ever gaining wisdom.'
21 Their tent-cords are pulled and the tent collapses, and they die in ignorance.
