New Century Version NCV
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
1
Then Elifaz the Teimani spoke up:
2 "If someone tried to speak with you, would you be upset? I cannot keep from speaking.
2
"If one tries to speak to you, will you mind? Yet who could keep from speaking?
3 Think about the many people you have taught and the weak hands you have made strong.
3
You have given moral instruction to many, you have firmed up feeble hands,
4 Your words have comforted those who fell, and you have strengthened those who could not stand.
4
your words have supported those who were stumbling, and you have strengthened the weak-kneed.
5 But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; trouble hits you, and you are terrified.
5
"But now it comes to you, and you are impatient; at the first touch, you are in shock.
6 You should have confidence because you respect God; you should have hope because you are innocent.
6
Isn't your fear of God your assurance, and the integrity of your ways your hope?
7 "Remember that the innocent will not die; honest people will never be destroyed.
7
"Think back: what innocent person has perished? Since when are the upright destroyed?
8 I have noticed that people who plow evil and plant trouble, harvest it.
8
What I see is that those who plow sin and sow trouble reap just that.
9 God's breath destroys them, and a blast of his anger kills them.
9
At a breath from God, they perish; at a blast from his anger, they are consumed.
10 Lions may roar and growl, but when the teeth of a strong lion are broken,
10
The lion may growl, the king lion may roar, but that old lion's teeth are broken;
11 that lion dies of hunger. The cubs of the mother lion are scattered.
11
so the lion succumbs from lack of prey, and the lion's cubs are scattered.
12 "A word was brought to me in secret, and my ears heard a whisper of it.
12
"For a word was stealthily brought to me, my ear caught only a whisper of it.
13 It was during a nightmare when people are in deep sleep.
13
In passing thoughts flashing through visions at night, when sleep lies heavy on people,
14 I was trembling with fear; all my bones were shaking.
14
a shiver of horror came over me; it made all my bones tremble.
15 A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
15
Then a spirit passed in front of my face; the hair of my flesh stood on end.
16 The spirit stopped, but I could not see what it was. A shape stood before my eyes, and I heard a quiet voice.
16
It stood still, but I couldn't make out its appearance; yet the form stayed there before my eyes. Then I heard a subdued voice:
17 It said, 'Can a human be more right than God? Can a person be pure before his maker?
17
'Can a human be seen by God as righteous? Can a mortal be pure before his maker?
18 God does not trust his angels; he blames them for mistakes.
18
[God] doesn't trust his own servants, he finds fault even with his angels;
19 So he puts even more blame on people who live in clay houses, whose foundations are made of dust, who can be crushed like a moth.
19
much more those living in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust. They are crushed more easily than a worm;
20 Between dawn and sunset many people are broken to pieces; without being noticed, they die and are gone forever.
20
shattered between morning and evening; they perish forever, and no one takes notice.
21 The ropes of their tents are pulled up, and they die without wisdom.'
21
Their cord within them is pulled up; then they die, without ever gaining wisdom.'
