1 Llama ahora, ¿habrá quién te responda? ¿Y a cuál de los santos te volverás?

“Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
2 Porque el enojo mata al insensato, y la ira da muerte al necio.

Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.
3 Yo he visto al insensato echar raíces, y al instante maldije su morada.

I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.
4 Sus hijos no tienen seguridad alguna, aun en la puerta son oprimidos , y no hay quien los libre.

His children are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender.
5 Su cosecha devoran los hambrientos, la toman aun de entre los espinos, y el intrigante ansía su riqueza.

The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
6 Porque la aflicción no viene del polvo, ni brota el infortunio de la tierra;

For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.
7 porque el hombre nace para la aflicción, como las chispas vuelan hacia arriba.

Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
8 Pero yo buscaría a Dios, y delante de Dios presentaría mi causa;

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.
9 El hace cosas grandes e inescrutables, maravillas sin número.

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.
10 El da la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra, y envía las aguas sobre los campos.

He provides rain for the earth; he sends water on the countryside.
11 Para poner en alto a los humildes, y a los que lloran levantarlos a lugar seguro,

The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 El frustra las tramas de los astutos, para que sus manos no tengan éxito.

He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.
13 El prende a los sabios en su propia astucia, y el consejo de los sagaces pronto se frustra.

He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.
14 De día tropiezan con las tinieblas, y a mediodía andan a tientas como de noche.

Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night.
15 Pero El salva al pobre de la espada, de sus bocas y de la mano del poderoso.

He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.
16 El desamparado, pues, tiene esperanza, y la injusticia tiene que cerrar su boca.

So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
17 He aquí, cuán bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios reprende; no desprecies, pues, la disciplina del Todopoderoso.

“Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
18 Porque El inflige dolor, y da alivio; El hiere, y sus manos también sanan.

For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal.
19 De seis aflicciones te librará, y en siete no te tocará el mal.

From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you.
20 En el hambre te salvará de la muerte, y en la guerra del poder de la espada.

In famine he will deliver you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
21 Estarás a cubierto del azote de la lengua, y no temerás la violencia cuando venga.

You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes.
22 De la violencia y del hambre te reirás, y no temerás a las fieras de la tierra.

You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals.
23 Pues con las piedras del campo harás tu alianza, y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo.

For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
24 Y sabrás que tu tienda está segura, porque visitarás tu morada y no temerás pérdida alguna.

You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.
25 También sabrás que tu descendencia será numerosa, y tus vástagos como la hierba de la tierra.

You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth.
26 En pleno vigor llegarás al sepulcro, como se hacinan las gavillas a su tiempo.

You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season.
27 He aquí, esto lo hemos examinado, y así es; óyelo, y conócelo para tu bien.

“We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”
