John 14

RHE

GW

1 Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God: believe also in me.
1 "Don't be troubled. Believe in God, and believe in me.
2 In my Father’s house there are many mansions. If not, I would have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you.
2 My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not true, would I have told you that I'm going to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I shall go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself: that where I am, you also may be.
3 If I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again. Then I will bring you into my presence so that you will be where I am.
4 And whither I go you know: and the way you know.
4 You know the way to the place where I am going."
5 Thomas saith to him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest. And how can we know the way?
5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you're going. So how can we know the way?"
6 Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.
6 Jesus answered him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the Father except through me.
7 If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father also: and from henceforth you shall know him. And you have seen him.
7 If you have known me, you will also know my Father. From now on you know him [through me] and have seen him [in me]."
8 Philip saith to him: Lord, shew us the Father; and it is enough for us.
8 Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will satisfy us."
9 Jesus saith to him: Have I been so long a time with you and have you not known me? Philip, he that seeth me seeth the Father also. How sayest thou: Shew us the Father?
9 Jesus replied, "I have been with all of you for a long time. Don't you know me yet, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works.
10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? What I'm telling you doesn't come from me. The Father, who lives in me, does what he wants.
11 Believe you not that I am in the Father and the Father in me?
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe me because of the things I do.
12 Otherwise believe for the very works’ sake. Amen, amen, I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do: and greater than these shall he do.
12 "I can guarantee this truth: Those who believe in me will do the things that I am doing. They will do even greater things because I am going to the Father.
13 Because I go to the Father: and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do: that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
13 I will do anything you ask [the Father] in my name so that the Father will be given glory because of the Son.
14 If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do.
14 If you ask me to do something, I will do it.
15 If you love me, keep my commandments.
15 "If you love me, you will obey my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father: and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever:
16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever.
17 The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him. But you shall know him; because he shall abide with you and shall be in you.
17 That helper is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it doesn't see or know him. You know him, because he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you.
18 "I will not leave you all alone. I will come back to you.
19 Yet a little while and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live.
19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. You will live because I live.
20 In that day you shall know that I am in my Father: and you in me, and I in you.
20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me and that I am in you.
21 He that hath my commandments and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.
21 Whoever knows and obeys my commandments is the person who loves me. Those who love me will have my Father's love, and I, too, will love them and show myself to them."
22 Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?
22 Judas (not Iscariot) asked Jesus, "Lord, what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?"
23 Jesus answered and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word. And my Father will love him and we will come to him and will make our abode with him.
23 Jesus answered him, "Those who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will go to them and make our home with them.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard is not mine; but the Father’s who sent me.
24 A person who doesn't love me doesn't do what I say. I don't make up what you hear me say. What I say comes from the Father who sent me.
25 These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.
25 "I have told you this while I'm still with you.
26 But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.
26 However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you.
27 Peace I leave with you: my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled: nor let it be afraid.
27 "I'm leaving you peace. I'm giving you my peace. I don't give you the kind of peace that the world gives. So don't be troubled or cowardly.
28 You have heard that I said to you: I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father: for the Father is greater than I.
28 You heard me tell you, 'I'm going away, but I'm coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe.
29 "I'm telling you this now before it happens. When it does happen, you will believe.
30 I will not now speak many things with you. For the prince of this world: cometh: and in me he hath not any thing.
30 The ruler of this world has no power over me. But he's coming, so I won't talk with you much longer.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father: and as the Father hath given me commandments, so do I. Arise, let us go hence.
31 However, I want the world to know that I love the Father and that I am doing exactly what the Father has commanded me to do. Get up! We have to leave."
