John 16:16-33

NIRV 16 "In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me." NIV 16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” NIRV 17 Some of his disciples spoke to one another. They said, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me'? And what does he mean by saying, 'I am going to the Father'?" NIV 17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” NIRV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." NIV 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.” NIRV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about those things. So he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant? Didn't you understand when I said, 'In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? NIRV 20 What I'm about to tell you is true. You will cry and be full of sorrow while the world is full of joy. You will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy. NIV 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. NIRV 21 "A woman giving birth to a baby has pain. This is because her time to give birth has come. But when her baby is born, she forgets the pain. She forgets because she is so happy that a baby has been born into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. NIRV 22 "That's the way it is with you. Now it's your time to be sad. But I will see you again. Then you will be full of joy. And no one will take your joy away. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. NIRV 23 "When that day comes, you will no longer ask me for anything. What I'm about to tell you is true. My Father will give you anything you ask for in my name. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. NIRV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive what you ask for. Then your joy will be complete. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. NIRV 25 "I have not been speaking to you plainly. But a time is coming when I will speak clearly. Then I will tell you plainly about my Father. NIV 25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. NIRV 26 When that day comes, you will ask for things in my name. I am not saying I will ask the Father instead of you asking him. NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. NIRV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me. He also loves you because you have believed that I came from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NIRV 28 "I came from the Father and entered the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” NIRV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking plainly. You are using examples that are clear. NIV 29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. NIRV 30 Now we can see that you know everything. You don't even need anyone to ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” NIRV 31 "At last you believe!" Jesus said. NIV 31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. NIRV 32 "But a time is coming when you will be scattered and go to your own homes. In fact, that time is already here. You will leave me all alone. But I am not really alone. My Father is with me. NIV 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. NIRV 33 "I have told you these things, so that you can have peace because of me. In this world you will have trouble. But cheer up! I have won the battle over the world." NIV 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
