John 18:19-40

CSB 19 The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching. NIV 19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. CSB 20 "I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus answered him. "I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregate, and I haven't spoken anything in secret. NIV 20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. CSB 21 Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said." NIV 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.” CSB 22 When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" NIV 22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. CSB 23 "If I have spoken wrongly," Jesus answered him, "give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?" NIV 23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?” CSB 24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. NIV 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. CSB 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "You aren't one of His disciples too, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not!" NIV 25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” CSB 26 One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you with Him in the garden?" NIV 26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” CSB 27 Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed. NIV 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. CSB 28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover. NIV 28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. CSB 29 Then Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?" NIV 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?” CSB 30 They answered him, "If this man weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed Him over to you." NIV 30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.” CSB 31 So Pilate told them, "Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law." "It's not legal for us to put anyone to death," the Jews declared. NIV 31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. CSB 32 They said this so that Jesus' words might be fulfilled signifying what sort of death He was going to die. NIV 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die. CSB 33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" NIV 33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” CSB 34 Jesus answered, "Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about Me?" NIV 34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” CSB 35 "I'm not a Jew, am I?" Pilate replied. "Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?" NIV 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” CSB 36 "My kingdom is not of this world," said Jesus. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here." NIV 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” CSB 37 "You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice." NIV 37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” CSB 38 "What is truth?" said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find no grounds for charging Him. NIV 38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. CSB 39 You have a custom that I release one [prisoner] to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" NIV 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?” CSB 40 They shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary. NIV 40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
