VUL 1 in principio erat Verbum et Verbum erat apud Deum et Deus erat Verbum NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. VUL 2 hoc erat in principio apud Deum NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. VUL 3 omnia per ipsum facta sunt et sine ipso factum est nihil quod factum est NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. VUL 4 in ipso vita erat et vita erat lux hominum NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. VUL 5 et lux in tenebris lucet et tenebrae eam non conprehenderunt NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. VUL 6 fuit homo missus a Deo cui nomen erat Iohannes NIV 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. VUL 12 quotquot autem receperunt eum dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri his qui credunt in nomine eius NIV 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— VUL 13 qui non ex sanguinibus neque ex voluntate carnis neque ex voluntate viri sed ex Deo nati sunt NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. VUL 14 et Verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis et vidimus gloriam eius gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre plenum gratiae et veritatis NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. VUL 15 Iohannes testimonium perhibet de ipso et clamat dicens hic erat quem dixi vobis qui post me venturus est ante me factus est quia prior me erat NIV 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) VUL 16 et de plenitudine eius nos omnes accepimus et gratiam pro gratia NIV 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. VUL 17 quia lex per Mosen data est gratia et veritas per Iesum Christum facta est NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. VUL 18 Deum nemo vidit umquam unigenitus Filius qui est in sinu Patris ipse enarravit NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
