GNT 19 The Jewish authorities in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, "Who are you?" GNT 20 John did not refuse to answer, but spoke out openly and clearly, saying: "I am not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” GNT 21 "Who are you, then?" they asked. "Are you Elijah?" "No, I am not," John answered. "Are you the Prophet?" they asked. "No," he replied. NIV 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” GNT 22 "Then tell us who you are," they said. "We have to take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” GNT 23 John answered by quoting the prophet Isaiah: "I am "the voice of someone shouting in the desert: Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!' " NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ” GNT 24 The messengers, who had been sent by the Pharisees, NIV 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent GNT 25 then asked John, "If you are not the Messiah nor Elijah nor the Prophet, why do you baptize?" NIV 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” GNT 26 John answered, "I baptize with water, but among you stands the one you do not know. NIV 26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. GNT 27 He is coming after me, but I am not good enough even to untie his sandals." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” GNT 28 All this happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
