CEB 6 A man named John was sent from God. NRS 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. CEB 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NRS 22 Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" CEB 23 John replied, "I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, Make the Lord's path straight, just as the prophet Isaiah said." NRS 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord,' " as the prophet Isaiah said. CEB 24 Those sent by the Pharisees NRS 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. CEB 25 asked, "Why do you baptize if you aren't the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" NRS 25 They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" CEB 26 John answered, "I baptize with water. Someone greater stands among you, whom you don't recognize. NRS 26 John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, CEB 27 He comes after me, but I'm not worthy to untie his sandal straps." NRS 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." CEB 28 This encounter took place across the Jordan in Bethany where John was baptizing.
