1 The first of the sabbaths, Mary Magdalene came early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre and saw the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came first to the sepulchre.
4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 And he, stooping down <em>and looking in</em>, saw the linen clothes lying; yet he did not go in.
5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6 Then came Simon Peter following him and went into the sepulchre and saw the linen clothes lying
6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7 and the napkin, that had been <em>placed</em> over his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 Then that other disciple, who came first to the sepulchre, went in also and he saw and believed.
8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 For as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own.
10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
11 But Mary stood outside <em>near</em> the sepulchre weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down <em>and looked</em> into the sepulchre
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 and saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been placed.
12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 And they said unto her, Woman, why dost thou weep? She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 And when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing <em>there</em> and did not know that it was Jesus.
14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said unto her, Woman, why dost thou weep? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said unto him, Lord, if thou didst carry him off, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said unto her, Mary! Turning herself around, she said unto him, Rabboni, which is to say, Master.
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said unto her, Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and <em>to</em> my God and your God.
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene came giving the news to the disciples, That I have seen the Lord, and he spoke these things unto me.
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first of the sabbaths, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said unto them, Peace <em>be</em> unto you.
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
20 And having said this, he showed them <em>his</em> hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace <em>be</em> unto you; as <em>my</em> Father has sent me, even so send I you.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on <em>them</em> and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit;
22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 unto those whose sins ye release, they shall be released; <em>and</em> unto those whose <em>sins</em> ye retain, they shall be retained.
23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus ), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples, therefore, said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Unless I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 And again eight days later, his disciples were within and Thomas with them; <em>then</em> Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace <em>be</em> unto you.
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27 Then he said to Thomas, Reach here thy finger and behold my hands and reach here thy hand and thrust <em>it</em> into my side and be not unbelieving, but faithful.
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed; blessed <em>are</em> those that have not seen and <em>yet</em> have believed.
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 And Jesus truly did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book;
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
31 but these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life in his name.
31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
