John 21

TMB

GW

1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way showed He Himself:
1 Later, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. This is what happened.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of His disciples.
2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee's sons, and two other disciples of Jesus were together.
3 Simon Peter said unto them, "I am going fishing." They said unto him, "We also go with thee." They went forth and entered into a boat immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
3 Simon Peter said to the others, "I'm going fishing." They told him, "We're going with you." They went out in a boat but didn't catch a thing that night.
4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
4 As the sun was rising, Jesus stood on the shore. The disciples didn't realize that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus said unto them, "Children, have ye any meat?" And they answered Him, "No."
5 Jesus asked them, "Friends, haven't you caught any fish?" They answered him, "No, we haven't."
6 And He said unto them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ye shall find." They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it in for the multitude of fishes.
6 He told them, "Throw the net out on the right side of the boat, and you'll catch some." So they threw the net out and were unable to pull it in because so many fish were in it.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girded his fisher's coat unto him (for he was naked) and cast himself into the sea.
7 The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord." When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put back on the clothes that he had taken off and jumped into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little boat (for they were not far from land, but, as it were, two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fishes.
8 The other disciples came with the boat and dragged the net full of fish. They weren't far from the shore, only about 100 yards.
9 As soon then as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon and bread.
9 When they went ashore, they saw a fire with a fish lying on the coals, and they saw a loaf of bread.
10 Jesus said unto them, "Bring of the fish which ye have now caught."
10 Jesus told them, "Bring some of the fish you've just caught."
11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty three; and though there were so many, yet the net was not broken.
11 Simon Peter got into the boat and pulled the net ashore. Though the net was filled with 153 large fish, it was not torn.
12 Jesus said unto them, "Come and dine." And none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who art Thou?" knowing that it was the Lord.
12 Jesus told them, "Come, have breakfast." None of the disciples dared to ask him who he was. They knew he was the Lord.
13 Jesus then came and took bread and gave it to them, and fish likewise.
13 Jesus took the bread, gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was risen from the dead.
14 This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after he had come back to life.
15 So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou Me more than these?" He said unto Him, "Yea, Lord; Thou knowest that I love Thee." He said unto him, "Feed My lambs."
15 After they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than the other disciples do?" Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus told him, "Feed my lambs."
16 He said to him again the second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou Me?" He said unto Him, "Yea, Lord; Thou knowest that I love Thee." He said unto him, "Feed My sheep."
16 Jesus asked him again, a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus told him, "Take care of my sheep."
17 He said unto him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou Me?" Peter was grieved because He said unto him the third time, "Lovest thou Me?" And he said unto Him, "Lord, Thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love Thee." Jesus said unto him, "Feed My sheep.
17 Jesus asked him a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt sad because Jesus had asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" So Peter said to him, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus told him, "Feed my sheep.
18 Verily, verily I say unto thee, when thou wast young, thou girded thyself and walked whither thou wouldest; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldest not."
18 I can guarantee this truth: When you were young, you would get ready to go where you wanted. But when you're old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will get you ready to take you where you don't want to go."
19 This spoke He, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said unto him, "Follow Me."
19 Jesus said this to show by what kind of death Peter would bring glory to God. After saying this, Jesus told Peter, "Follow me!"
20 Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at supper, and said, "Lord, who is he that betrayeth Thee?"
20 Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved. That disciple was following them. He was the one who leaned against Jesus' chest at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray you?"
21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, "Lord, and what shall this man do?"
21 When Peter saw him, he asked Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
22 Jesus said unto him, "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou Me."
22 Jesus said to Peter, "If I want him to live until I come again, how does that concern you? Follow me!"
23 Then this saying went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. Yet Jesus had not said unto him, "He shall not die," but, "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?"
23 So a rumor that that disciple wouldn't die spread among Jesus' followers. But Jesus didn't say that he wouldn't die. What Jesus said was, "If I want him to live until I come again, how does that concern you?"
24 This is the disciple who testifieth of these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
24 This disciple was an eyewitness of these things and wrote them down. We know that what he says is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
25 Jesus also did many other things. If every one of them were written down, I suppose the world wouldn't have enough room for the books that would be written.
