John 5:12-42

NLT 12 “Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded. NIV 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” NLT 13 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd. NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. NLT 14 But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.” NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” NLT 15 Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. NLT 16 So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. NLT 17 But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” NIV 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” NLT 18 So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God. NIV 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. NLT 19 So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. NLT 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. NLT 21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. NLT 22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, NLT 23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. NLT 24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. NIV 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. NLT 25 “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. NIV 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. NLT 26 The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. NLT 27 And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. NLT 28 Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son, NIV 28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice NLT 29 and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment. NIV 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. NLT 30 I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. NLT 31 “If I were to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be valid. NIV 31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. NLT 32 But someone else is also testifying about me, and I assure you that everything he says about me is true. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true. NLT 33 In fact, you sent investigators to listen to John the Baptist, and his testimony about me was true. NIV 33 “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. NLT 34 Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. NLT 35 John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. NLT 36 But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me. NIV 36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me. NLT 37 And the Father who sent me has testified about me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen him face to face, NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, NLT 38 and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. NLT 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! NIV 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, NLT 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. NLT 41 “Your approval means nothing to me, NIV 41 “I do not accept glory from human beings, NLT 42 because I know you don’t have God’s love within you. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
