John 7:1-24

ESV 1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. MSG 1 Later Jesus was going about his business in Galilee. He didn't want to travel in Judea because the Jews there were looking for a chance to kill him. ESV 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. MSG 2 It was near the time of Tabernacles, a feast observed annually by the Jews. ESV 3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. MSG 3 His brothers said, "Why don't you leave here and go up to the Feast so your disciples can get a good look at the works you do? ESV 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world." MSG 4 No one who intends to be publicly known does everything behind the scenes. If you're serious about what you are doing, come out in the open and show the world." ESV 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. MSG 5 His brothers were pushing him like this because they didn't believe in him either. ESV 6 Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. MSG 6 Jesus came back at them, "Don't crowd me. This isn't my time. It's your time - it's always your time; you have nothing to lose. ESV 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. MSG 7 The world has nothing against you, but it's up in arms against me. It's against me because I expose the evil behind its pretensions. ESV 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come." MSG 8 You go ahead, go up to the Feast. Don't wait for me. I'm not ready. It's not the right time for me." ESV 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. MSG 9 He said this and stayed on in Galilee. ESV 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. MSG 10 But later, after his family had gone up to the Feast, he also went. But he kept out of the way, careful not to draw attention to himself. ESV 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?" MSG 11 The Jews were already out looking for him, asking around, "Where is that man?" ESV 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." MSG 12 There was a lot of contentious talk about him circulating through the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." But others said, "Not so. He's selling snake oil." ESV 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. MSG 13 This kind of talk went on in guarded whispers because of the intimidating Jewish leaders. ESV 14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. MSG 14 With the Feast already half over, Jesus showed up in the Temple, teaching. ESV 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?" MSG 15 The Jews were impressed, but puzzled: "How does he know so much without being schooled?" ESV 16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. MSG 16 Jesus said, "I didn't make this up. What I teach comes from the One who sent me. ESV 17 If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. MSG 17 Anyone who wants to do his will can test this teaching and know whether it's from God or whether I'm making it up. ESV 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. MSG 18 A person making things up tries to make himself look good. But someone trying to honor the one who sent him sticks to the facts and doesn't tamper with reality. ESV 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?" MSG 19 It was Moses, wasn't it, who gave you God's Law? But none of you are living it. So why are you trying to kill me?" ESV 20 The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?" MSG 20 The crowd said, "You're crazy! Who's trying to kill you? You're demon-possessed." ESV 21 Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and you all marvel at it. MSG 21 Jesus said, "I did one miraculous thing a few months ago, and you're still standing around getting all upset, wondering what I'm up to. ESV 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. MSG 22 Moses prescribed circumcision - originally it came not from Moses but from his ancestors - and so you circumcise a man, dealing with one part of his body, even if it's the Sabbath. ESV 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? MSG 23 You do this in order to preserve one item in the Law of Moses. So why are you upset with me because I made a man's whole body well on the Sabbath? ESV 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." MSG 24 Don't be nitpickers; use your head - and heart! - to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right."
