New International Version NIV
Good News Translation GNT
1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
1
From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God:
2 He said: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
2
"In my distress, O Lord, I called to you, and you answered me. From deep in the world of the dead I cried for help, and you heard me.
3 You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
3
You threw me down into the depths, to the very bottom of the sea, where the waters were all around me, and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
4
I thought I had been banished from your presence and would never see your holy Temple again.
5 The engulfing waters threatened me,the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
5
The water came over me and choked me; the sea covered me completely, and seaweed wrapped around my head.
6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit.
6
I went down to the very roots of the mountains, into the land whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, brought me back from the depths alive.
7 “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
7
When I felt my life slipping away, then, O Lord, I prayed to you, and in your holy Temple you heard me.
8 “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.
8
Those who worship worthless idols have abandoned their loyalty to you.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’ ”
9
But I will sing praises to you; I will offer you a sacrifice and do what I have promised. Salvation comes from the Lord!"
10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
10
Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah up on the beach, and it did.
