Jonah 3

CEB

GW

1 The LORD's word came to Jonah a second time:
1 Then the LORD spoke his word to Jonah a second time. He said,
2 "Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and declare against it the proclamation that I am commanding you."
2 "Leave at once for the important city, Nineveh. Announce to the people the message I have given you."
3 And Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD's word. (Now Nineveh was indeed an enormous city, a three days' walk across.)
3 Jonah immediately went to Nineveh as the LORD told him. Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through it.
4 Jonah started into the city, walking one day, and he cried out, "Just forty days more and Nineveh will be overthrown!"
4 Jonah entered the city and walked for about a day. Then he said, "In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed."
5 And the people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and put on mourning clothes, from the greatest of them to the least significant.
5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They decided to fast, and everyone, from the most important to the least important, dressed in sackcloth.
6 When word of it reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, stripped himself of his robe, covered himself with mourning clothes, and sat in ashes.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 Then he announced, "In Nineveh, by decree of the king and his officials: Neither human nor animal, cattle nor flock, will taste anything! No grazing and no drinking water!
7 Then he made this announcement and sent it throughout the city: "This is an order from the king and his nobles: No one is to eat or drink anything. This includes all people, animals, cattle, and sheep.
8 Let humans and animals alike put on mourning clothes, and let them call upon God forcefully! And let all persons stop their evil behavior and the violence that's under their control!"
8 Every person and animal must put on sackcloth. Cry loudly to God for help. Turn from your wicked ways and your acts of violence.
9 He thought, Who knows? God may see this and turn from his wrath, so that we might not perish.
9 Who knows? God may reconsider his plans and turn from his burning anger so that we won't die."
10 God saw what they were doing—that they had ceased their evil behavior. So God stopped planning to destroy them, and he didn't do it.
10 God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So God reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn't do it.
