2 Entonces el Señor<br /> le dijo a Gedeón: «Tienes demasiados guerreros contigo. Si dejo que todos ustedes peleen contra los madianitas, los israelitas se jactarán ante mí de que se salvaron con su propia fuerza.

3 Por lo tanto, dile al pueblo: “A todo aquel que le falte valentía o que tenga miedo, que abandone este monte<br /> y se vaya a su casa”». Así que veintidós mil de ellos se fueron a su casa, y quedaron solo diez mil dispuestos a pelear.

4 Pero el Señor<br /> le dijo a Gedeón: «Todavía son demasiados. Hazlos descender al manantial, y yo los pondré a prueba para determinar quién irá contigo y quién no».

5 Cuando Gedeón bajó con sus guerreros hasta el agua, el Señor<br /> le dijo: «Divide a los hombres en dos grupos. En un grupo, pon a todos los que beban el agua en sus manos lamiéndola como hacen los perros. En el otro grupo, pon a todos los que se arrodillan para beber directamente del arroyo».

6 Solo trescientos de los hombres bebieron con las manos. Los demás se arrodillaron para beber con la boca en el arroyo.

7 Entonces el Señor<br /> le dijo a Gedeón: «Con estos trescientos hombres, rescataré a Israel y te daré la victoria sobre los madianitas. Envía a todos los demás a su casa».

8 Así que Gedeón recogió las provisiones y los cuernos de carnero de los otros guerreros y mandó a cada uno de ellos a su casa, pero se quedó con los trescientos hombres.<br />El campamento madianita estaba en el valle, directamente abajo de donde se encontraba Gedeón.

9 Esa noche el Señor<br /> le dijo: «¡Levántate! ¡Desciende al campamento madianita, porque te he dado la victoria sobre ellos!

10 Pero si tienes miedo de atacar, desciende al campamento con tu siervo Fura.

11 Escucha lo que dicen los madianitas, y cobrarás mucho ánimo. Entonces estarás ansioso por atacar».<br />Así que Gedeón, acompañado por Fura, descendió hasta el límite del campamento enemigo.

12 Los ejércitos de Madián, de Amalec y del pueblo del oriente se habían establecido en el valle como un enjambre de langostas. Sus camellos eran como los granos de arena a la orilla del mar, ¡imposibles de contar!

13 Entonces Gedeón se acercó sigilosamente, precisamente cuando un hombre le contaba un sueño a su compañero.<br />—Tuve un sueño —decía el hombre— en el cual un pan de cebada venía rodando cuesta abajo hacia el campamento madianita; ¡entonces cuando golpeaba una carpa, la volteaba y la aplastaba!

14 Su compañero le respondió:<br />—Tu sueño solo puede significar una cosa: ¡Dios le ha dado a Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el israelita, la victoria sobre Madián y todos sus aliados!

15 Cuando Gedeón oyó el sueño y la interpretación, se inclinó en adoración ante el Señor<br />.<br /> Luego regresó al campamento israelita y gritó: «¡Levántense, porque el Señor<br /> les ha dado la victoria sobre las multitudes madianitas!».

16 Así que dividió a los trescientos hombres en tres grupos y le dio a cada hombre un cuerno de carnero y una vasija de barro con una antorcha adentro.

17 Después les dijo: «Fíjense en mí. Cuando yo llegue al límite del campamento, hagan lo mismo que yo.

18 En cuanto yo y los que están conmigo toquemos los cuernos de carnero, ustedes también toquen sus cuernos alrededor de todo el campamento y griten: “¡Por el Señor<br /> y por Gedeón!”».

19 Fue apenas pasada la medianoche,<br /> después del cambio de guardia, cuando Gedeón y los cien hombres que iban con él llegaron al límite del campamento madianita. Entonces de un momento al otro, tocaron los cuernos de carnero y rompieron las vasijas de barro.

20 Enseguida los tres grupos tocaron juntos los cuernos y rompieron las vasijas. Con la mano izquierda sostenían la antorcha ardiente, y en la mano derecha llevaban el cuerno, y todos gritaban: «¡Una espada por el Señor<br /> y también por Gedeón!».

21 Cada hombre permaneció en su puesto alrededor del campamento, y observaron cómo los madianitas corrían de un lado a otro, llenos de pánico y gritando mientras se daban a la fuga.

22 Cuando los trescientos israelitas tocaron los cuernos de carnero, el Señor<br /> hizo que los guerreros del campamento pelearan entre sí con sus espadas. Los que quedaron con vida huyeron a lugares tan lejanos como Bet-sita, cerca de Zerera, y hasta la frontera de Abel-mehola, cerca de Tabat.

23 Entonces Gedeón mandó a buscar a los guerreros de Neftalí, de Aser y de Manasés, quienes se unieron para dar caza al ejército de Madián.

24 Gedeón también envió mensajeros por toda la zona montañosa de Efraín que decían: «Desciendan para atacar a los madianitas. Frénenlos antes de que lleguen a los vados del río Jordán en Bet-bara».<br />Así que los hombres de Efraín hicieron lo que se les dijo.

25 Capturaron a Oreb y a Zeeb, los dos comandantes de los madianitas, y mataron a Oreb en la roca de Oreb, y a Zeeb en el lagar de Zeeb; y no dejaron de perseguir a los madianitas. Después los israelitas le llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y Zeeb a Gedeón, quien estaba junto al río Jordán.

1 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.

2 The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’

3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.

4 But the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”

5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.”

6 Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.

7 The LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.”

8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.

9 During that night the LORD said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.

10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah

11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp.

12 The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.

13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”

14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”

15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”

16 Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside.

17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do.

18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon.’ ”

19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands.

20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!”

21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.

22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the LORD caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.

23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites.

24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah.

25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.
