Lamentations 3

GNT 1 I am one who knows what it is to be punished by God. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the LORD’s wrath. GNT 2 He drove me deeper and deeper into darkness NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; GNT 3 And beat me again and again with merciless blows. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. GNT 4 He has left my flesh open and raw, and has broken my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. GNT 5 He has shut me in a prison of misery and anguish. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. GNT 6 He has forced me to live in the stagnant darkness of death. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. GNT 7 He has bound me in chains; I am a prisoner with no hope of escape. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. GNT 8 I cry aloud for help, but God refuses to listen; NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. GNT 9 I stagger as I walk; stone walls block me wherever I turn. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. GNT 10 He waited for me like a bear; he pounced on me like a lion. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, GNT 11 He chased me off the road, tore me to pieces, and left me. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. GNT 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. GNT 13 He shot his arrows deep into my body. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. GNT 14 People laugh at me all day long; I am a joke to them all. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. GNT 15 Bitter suffering is all he has given me for food and drink. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink. GNT 16 He rubbed my face in the ground and broke my teeth on rocks. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. GNT 17 I have forgotten what health and peace and happiness are. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. GNT 18 I do not have much longer to live; my hope in the Lord is gone. NIV 18 So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.” GNT 19 The thought of my pain, my homelessness, is bitter poison. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. GNT 20 I think of it constantly, and my spirit is depressed. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. GNT 21 Yet hope returns when I remember this one thing: NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: GNT 22 The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, NIV 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. GNT 23 Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. GNT 24 The Lord is all I have, and so in him I put my hope. NIV 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” GNT 25 The Lord is good to everyone who trusts in him, NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; GNT 26 So it is best for us to wait in patience - to wait for him to save us - NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. GNT 27 And it is best to learn this patience in our youth. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. GNT 28 When we suffer, we should sit alone in silent patience; NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. GNT 29 We should bow in submission, for there may still be hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope. GNT 30 Though beaten and insulted, we should accept it all. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. GNT 31 The Lord is merciful and will not reject us forever. NIV 31 For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. GNT 32 He may bring us sorrow, but his love for us is sure and strong. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. GNT 33 He takes no pleasure in causing us grief or pain. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. GNT 34 The Lord knows when our spirits are crushed in prison; NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, GNT 35 He knows when we are denied the rights he gave us; NIV 35 to deny people their rights before the Most High, GNT 36 When justice is perverted in court, he knows. NIV 36 to deprive them of justice— would not the Lord see such things? GNT 37 The will of the Lord alone is always carried out. NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? GNT 38 Good and evil alike take place at his command. NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? GNT 39 Why should we ever complain when we are punished for our sin? NIV 39 Why should the living complain when punished for their sins? GNT 40 Let us examine our ways and turn back to the Lord. NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. GNT 41 Let us open our hearts to God in heaven and pray, NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: GNT 42 "We have sinned and rebelled, and you, O Lord, have not forgiven us. NIV 42 “We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. GNT 43 "You pursued us and killed us; your mercy was hidden by your anger, NIV 43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. GNT 44 By a cloud of fury too thick for our prayers to get through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. GNT 45 You have made us the garbage dump of the world. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. GNT 46 "We are insulted and mocked by all our enemies. NIV 46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. GNT 47 We have been through disaster and ruin; we live in danger and fear. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction.” GNT 48 My eyes flow with rivers of tears at the destruction of my people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. GNT 49 "My tears will pour out in a ceaseless stream NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, GNT 50 Until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees us. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. GNT 51 My heart is grieved when I see what has happened to the women of the city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. GNT 52 "I was trapped like a bird by enemies who had no cause to hate me. NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. GNT 53 They threw me alive into a pit and closed the opening with a stone. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; GNT 54 Water began to close over me, and I thought death was near. NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish. GNT 55 "From the bottom of the pit, O Lord, I cried out to you, NIV 55 I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the pit. GNT 56 And when I begged you to listen to my cry, you heard. NIV 56 You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.” GNT 57 You answered me and told me not to be afraid. NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.” GNT 58 "You came to my rescue, Lord, and saved my life. NIV 58 You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life. GNT 59 Judge in my favor; you know the wrongs done against me. NIV 59 LORD, you have seen the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! GNT 60 You know how my enemies hate me and how they plot against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. GNT 61 "You have heard them insult me, O Lord; you know all their plots. NIV 61 LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me— GNT 62 All day long they talk about me and make their plans. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. GNT 63 From morning till night they make fun of me. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. GNT 64 "Punish them for what they have done, O Lord; NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, LORD, for what their hands have done. GNT 65 Curse them and fill them with despair! NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! GNT 66 Hunt them down and wipe them off the earth!" NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
