Lamentations 3

LEB 1 I am a man who has seen misery, under the rod of his wrath. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the LORD’s wrath. LEB 2 He has driven me along, he brought darkness and not light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; LEB 3 Surely he has turned his hand against me, all day long. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. LEB 4 He has worn out my flesh and skin, he has broken my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. LEB 5 {He has besieged} and engulfed me with bitterness and hardship. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. LEB 6 In darkness he has let me dwell like [the] dead of long ago. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. LEB 7 He has built a wall around me, I cannot go out; he has made my bronze fetters heavy. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. LEB 8 Though I cry out for help, he shuts out my prayers. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. LEB 9 He has blocked my ways with dressed stones; he has made my paths crooked. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. LEB 10 To me he [is] like a bear lying in wait, a lion in hiding. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, LEB 11 He has forsaken my way and torn me to pieces; he has caused me desolation. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. LEB 12 He has bent his bow and set me as the target for the arrow. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. LEB 13 He shot {the arrows of his quiver} into my kidneys. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. LEB 14 I have become a laughingstock for all the people, their mocking song all day long. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. LEB 15 He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me [with] wormwood. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink. LEB 16 He has broken my teeth on grit, he has trampled me down in ash. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. LEB 17 My life has been removed from peace, I have forgotten goodness. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. LEB 18 And I have said, "My glory is ruined, my expectation from Yahweh." NIV 18 So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.” LEB 19 Remember my misery and bitterness, the wormwood and venom! NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. LEB 20 Surely my soul remembers and bows down within me. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. LEB 21 This {I have reminded myself}, therefore I will hope. NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: LEB 22 The loyal love of Yahweh does not cease; his compassions do not come to an end. NIV 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. LEB 23 [They] are new in the morning, great is your faithfulness. NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. LEB 24 "Yahweh is my portion," says my soul, "Thus I will hope on him." NIV 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” LEB 25 Yahweh is good to those who wait on him, to the person that seeks him. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; LEB 26 [It is] good to wait in silence for the salvation of Yahweh. NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. LEB 27 [It is] good for a man who carries the yoke of his childhood. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. LEB 28 Let him sit alone and be silent when he has laid it on him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. LEB 29 Let {him put} his mouth in the dust; perhaps there is hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope. LEB 30 Let him give a cheek to his smiter, let him be filled with disgrace. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. LEB 31 For the Lord will not reject forever. NIV 31 For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. LEB 32 For even though he causes grief he has compassion according to the greatness of his royal love. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. LEB 33 He does not {afflict willingly}, or grieve {anyone}. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. LEB 34 To crush under his feet all [the] prisoners of [the] earth; NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, LEB 35 {to deprive one of justice} before the face of the Most High; NIV 35 to deny people their rights before the Most High, LEB 36 to subvert a person in a legal dispute --the Lord has not found delight [in these things]. NIV 36 to deprive them of justice— would not the Lord see such things? LEB 37 {Who can speak} and it will happen [if] the Lord has not commanded [it]? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? LEB 38 [Is] it not from the mouth of the Most High [that] disaster and good will come? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? LEB 39 Why should any living person complain about his sin? NIV 39 Why should the living complain when punished for their sins? LEB 40 Let us test and examine our ways; let us return to Yahweh. NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. LEB 41 Let us lift up our hearts with our hands to God in the heavens. NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: LEB 42 We ourselves have transgressed and rebelled, you have not forgiven. NIV 42 “We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. LEB 43 You have covered [yourself] {in anger} and pursued us, you have slain and not shown mercy. NIV 43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. LEB 44 You have covered yourself in a cloud {so that prayer cannot pass through}. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. LEB 45 You have made us scum and refuse in the midst of the nations. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. LEB 46 All our enemies have opened their mouth against us. NIV 46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. LEB 47 Fear and a pit have come upon us, desolation and destruction. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction.” LEB 48 Channels of water run down my eyes because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. LEB 49 My eyes have poured down unceasingly without respite, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, LEB 50 until Yahweh looks down and sees from heaven. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. LEB 51 My eyes inflict my soul because of all the daughters of my city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. LEB 52 My enemies hunt me without cause, like a bird. NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. LEB 53 {They have silenced me in a pit}, they have thrown a stone at me. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; LEB 54 Water has flown over my head, I said, "I am cut off." NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish. LEB 55 I have called your name, O Yahweh, from the depths of the pit. NIV 55 I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the pit. LEB 56 You have heard my cry, "Do not shut your ear to my cry for help, for my relief!" NIV 56 You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.” LEB 57 You came near on a day [when] I called you, you said, "Do not fear!" NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.” LEB 58 O Lord, you have pleaded for {my cause}, you have redeemed my life. NIV 58 You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life. LEB 59 You have seen my injustice, O Yahweh; judge my case. NIV 59 LORD, you have seen the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! LEB 60 You have seen all their vengeance, all there plans against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. LEB 61 You have heard their disgrace, O Yahweh, all their plans against me. NIV 61 LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me— LEB 62 The lips and meditation of my assailants [are] against me all day long. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. LEB 63 Look at their sitting and their standing, I [am] their mocking song. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. LEB 64 Return to them what is deserved, O Yahweh, according to the work of their hands. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, LORD, for what their hands have done. LEB 65 Give them a stubborn heart; curse them! NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! LEB 66 Pursue them {in anger} and destroy them from under the heavens of Yahweh. NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
