1 How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull! The sacred gems are scattered at every street corner.

2 How the precious children of Zion, once worth their weight in gold, are now considered as pots of clay, the work of a potter’s hands!

3 Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but my people have become heartless like ostriches in the desert.

4 Because of thirst the infant’s tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth; the children beg for bread, but no one gives it to them.

5 Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those brought up in royal purple now lie on ash heaps.

6 The punishment of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment without a hand turned to help her.

7 Their princes were brighter than snow and whiter than milk, their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance like lapis lazuli.

8 But now they are blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick.

9 Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field.

10 With their own hands compassionate women have cooked their own children, who became their food when my people were destroyed.

11 The LORD has given full vent to his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations.

12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the peoples of the world, that enemies and foes could enter the gates of Jerusalem.

13 But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

14 Now they grope through the streets as if they were blind. They are so defiled with blood that no one dares to touch their garments.

15 “Go away! You are unclean!” people cry to them. “Away! Away! Don’t touch us!” When they flee and wander about, people among the nations say, “They can stay here no longer.”

16 The LORD himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. The priests are shown no honor, the elders no favor.

17 Moreover, our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our towers we watched for a nation that could not save us.

18 People stalked us at every step, so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near, our days were numbered, for our end had come.

19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they chased us over the mountains and lay in wait for us in the desert.

20 The LORD’s anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

21 Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.

22 Your punishment will end, Daughter Zion; he will not prolong your exile. But he will punish your sin, Daughter Edom, and expose your wickedness.

1 ¡El oro ha perdido su lustre!¡Se ha empañado el oro fino!¡Regadas por las esquinas de las callesse han quedado las joyas sagradas!

2 A los apuestos habitantes de Sión,que antaño valían su peso en oro,hoy se les ve como vasijas de barro,¡como la obra de un alfarero!

3 Hasta los chacales ofrecen el pechoy dan leche a sus cachorros,pero Jerusalén ya no tiene sentimientos;¡es como los avestruces del desierto!

4 Tanta es la sed que tienen los niños,que la lengua se les pega al paladar.Piden pan los pequeñuelos,pero nadie se lo da.

5 Quienes antes comían los más ricos manjareshoy desfallecen de hambre por las calles.Quienes antes se vestían de fina púrpurahoy se revuelcan en la inmundicia.

6 Más grande que los pecados de Sodomaes la iniquidad de Jerusalén;¡fue derribada en un instante,y nadie le tendió la mano!

7 Más radiantes que la nieve eran sus príncipes,y más blancos que la leche;más rosado que el coral era su cuerpo;su apariencia era la del zafiro.

8 Pero ahora se ven más sucios que el hollín;en la calle nadie los reconoce.Su piel, reseca como la leña,se les pega a los huesos.

9 ¡Dichosos los que mueren por la espada,más que los que mueren de hambre!Torturados por el hambre desfallecen,pues no cuentan con los frutos del campo.

10 Con sus manos, mujeres compasivascocinaron a sus propios hijos,y esos niños fueron su alimentocuando Jerusalén fue destruida.

11 El SEÑOR dio rienda suelta a su enojo;dejó correr el ardor de su ira.Le prendió fuego a Sióny la consumió hasta sus cimientos.

12 No creían los reyes de la tierra,ni tampoco los habitantes del mundo,que los enemigos y adversarios de Jerusaléncruzarían alguna vez sus puertas.

13 Pero sucedió.Por los pecados de sus profetas.Por las iniquidades de sus sacerdotes.¡Por derramar sangre inocenteen las calles de la ciudad!

14 Con las manos manchadas de sangre,andan por las calles como ciegos.No hay nadie que se atrevaa tocar siquiera sus vestidos.

15 «¡Largo de aquí, impuros!», les grita la gente.«¡Fuera! ¡Fuera! ¡No nos toquen!»Entre las naciones paganas les dicen:«Son unos vagabundos, que andan huyendo.No pueden quedarse aquí más tiempo».

16 El SEÑOR mismo los ha dispersado;ya no se preocupa por ellos.Ya no hay respeto para los sacerdotesni compasión para los ancianos.

17 Para colmo, desfallecen nuestros ojosesperando en vano que alguien nos ayude.Desde nuestras torres estamos en esperade una nación que no puede salvarnos.

18 A cada paso nos acechan;no podemos ya andar por las calles.Nuestro fin se acerca, nos ha llegado la hora;¡nuestros días están contados!

19 Nuestros perseguidores resultaronmás veloces que las águilas del cielo;nos persiguieron por las montañas,nos acecharon en el desierto.

20 También cayó en sus redes el ungido del SEÑOR,que era nuestra razón de vivir.Era él de quien decíamos:¡Viviremos bajo su sombra entre las naciones!

21 ¡Regocíjate y alégrate, capital de Edom,que vives como reina en la tierra de Uz!¡Pero ya tendrás que beber de esta copa,y quedarás embriagada y desnuda!

22 Tu castigo se ha cumplido, bella Sión;Dios no volverá a desterrarte.Pero a ti, capital de Edom, te castigará por tu maldady pondrá al descubierto tus pecados.
