GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 Remember, O Jehovah, what is come upon us; consider, and see our reproach.
1
"Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Take a look at our disgrace!
2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
2
"The land we inherited has been turned over to strangers. Our homes have been turned over to foreigners.
3 We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.
3
We are orphans without a father. Our mothers are like widows.
4 Our water have we to drink for money, our wood cometh unto us for a price.
4
We have to pay to drink our own water. We have to pay to chop our own wood.
5 Our pursuers are on our necks: we are weary, we have no rest.
5
[Our enemies] are breathing down our necks. We are worn out [and] not permitted to rest.
6 We have given the hand to Egypt, [and] to Asshur, to be satisfied with bread.
6
We had to beg Egypt and Assyria for food.
7 Our fathers have sinned, [and] they are not; and we bear their iniquities.
7
Our ancestors sinned. Now they are gone, [but] we have to take the punishment for their wickedness.
8 Bondmen rule over us: there is no deliverer out of their hand.
8
Slaves rule us. There is no one to rescue us from them.
9 We have to get our bread at the risk of our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness.
9
To get our food, we have to risk our lives in the heat of the desert.
10 Our skin gloweth like an oven, because of the burning heat of the famine.
10
Our skin is as hot as an oven from the burning heat of starvation.
11 They have ravished the women in Zion, the maids in the cities of Judah.
11
Women in Zion are raped, so are the girls in the cities of Judah.
12 Princes were hanged up by their hand; the faces of elders were not honoured.
12
[Our] leaders are hung by their hands. [Our] older leaders are shown no respect.
13 The young men have borne the mill, and the youths have stumbled under the wood.
13
[Our] young men work at the mill, and [our] boys stagger under loads of wood.
14 The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music.
14
[Our] older leaders have stopped meeting at the city gate, and [our] young men no longer play their music.
15 The joy of our heart hath ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.
15
There is no joy left in our hearts. Our dancing has turned into mourning.
16 The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, for we have sinned!
16
The crown has fallen from our head. Because we have sinned, it has been disastrous for us.
17 For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes have grown dim,
17
This is why we feel sick. This is why our eyes see less and less.
18 Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate: foxes walk over it.
18
Foxes roam around on Mount Zion, which lies in ruins.
19 Thou, Jehovah, dwellest for ever; thy throne is from generation to generation.
19
"But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever, and your reign continues throughout every generation.
20 Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, dost thou forsake us so long time?
20
Why have you completely forgotten us? Why have you abandoned us for such a long time?
21 Turn thou us unto thee, Jehovah, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
21
O LORD, bring us back to you, and we'll come back. Give us back the life we had long ago,
22 Or is it that thou hast utterly rejected us? Wouldest thou be exceeding wroth against us?
22
unless you have completely rejected us [and] are very angry with us."
