CSB 1 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, CSB 2 "Tell the Israelites: You may eat all these [kinds] of land animals. NIV 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: CSB 3 You may eat any animal with divided hooves and that chews the cud. NIV 3 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. CSB 4 But among the ones that chew the cud or have hooves you are not to eat [these]: the camel, though it chews the cud, does not have hooves-it is unclean for you; NIV 4 “ ‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. CSB 5 the hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have hooves-it is unclean for you; NIV 5 The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. CSB 6 the hare, though it chews the cud, does not have hooves-it is unclean for you; NIV 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. CSB 7 the pig, though it has divided hooves, does not chew the cud-it is unclean for you. NIV 7 And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. CSB 8 Do not eat any of their meat or touch their carcasses-they are unclean for you. NIV 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. CSB 9 "This [is what] you may eat from all that is in the water: You may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or streams. NIV 9 “ ‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. CSB 10 But these are to be detestable to you: everything that does not have fins and scales in the seas or streams, among all the swarming things and [other] living creatures in the water. NIV 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to regard as unclean. CSB 11 They are to remain detestable to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must detest their carcasses. NIV 11 And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean. CSB 12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be detestable to you. NIV 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you. CSB 13 "You are to detest these birds. They must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, NIV 13 “ ‘These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, CSB 14 the kite, the various kinds of falcon, NIV 14 the red kite, any kind of black kite, CSB 15 every kind of raven, NIV 15 any kind of raven, CSB 16 the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the gull, the various kinds of hawk, NIV 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, CSB 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the long-eared owl, NIV 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, CSB 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, NIV 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, CSB 19 the stork, the various kinds of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. NIV 19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat. CSB 20 "All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. NIV 20 “ ‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you. CSB 21 But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground. NIV 21 There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. CSB 22 You may eat these: the various kinds of locust, the various kinds of katydid, the various kinds of cricket, and the various kinds of grasshopper. NIV 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. CSB 23 All [other] winged insects that have four feet are to be detestable to you. NIV 23 But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean. CSB 24 "These will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, NIV 24 “ ‘You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. CSB 25 and whoever carries any of their carcasses must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. NIV 25 Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. CSB 26 All animals that have hooves but do not have a divided hoof and do not chew the cud are unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean. NIV 26 “ ‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. CSB 27 All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, NIV 27 Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. CSB 28 and anyone who carries their carcasses must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you. NIV 28 Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you. CSB 29 "These creatures that swarm on the ground are unclean for you: the weasel, the mouse, the various kinds of large lizard, NIV 29 “ ‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, CSB 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon. NIV 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. CSB 31 These are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening. NIV 31 Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. CSB 32 When any one of them dies and falls on anything it becomes unclean-any item of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work. It is to be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean. NIV 32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. CSB 33 If any of them falls into any clay pot, everything in it will become unclean; you must break it. NIV 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot. CSB 34 Any edible food coming into contact with [that unclean] water will become unclean, and any drinkable liquid in any container will become unclean. NIV 34 Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. CSB 35 Anything one of their carcasses falls on will become unclean. If it is an oven or stove, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you. NIV 35 Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. CSB 36 A spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but someone who touches a carcass [in it] will become unclean. NIV 36 A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. CSB 37 If one of their carcasses falls on any seed that is to be sown, it is clean; NIV 37 If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. CSB 38 but if water has been put on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you. NIV 38 But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. CSB 39 "If one of the animals that you use for food dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean until evening. NIV 39 “ ‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening. CSB 40 Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. Anyone who carries its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. NIV 40 Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. CSB 41 "All the creatures that swarm on the earth are detestable; they must not be eaten. NIV 41 “ ‘Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. CSB 42 Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet, for they are detestable. NIV 42 You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. CSB 43 Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them. NIV 43 Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. CSB 44 For I am the Lord your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. NIV 44 I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. CSB 45 For I am the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy. NIV 45 I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. CSB 46 "This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground, NIV 46 “ ‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. CSB 47 in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten." NIV 47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’ ”
