1 After the death of Aaron's two sons, which happened when they approached the LORD and died, the LORD spoke to Moses:
1
After the death of Aaron's two sons - they died when they came before God with strange fire - God spoke to Moses:
2 Tell your brother Aaron that he cannot come whenever he wants into the holy area inside the inner curtain, to the front of the cover that is on the chest, or else he will die, because I am present in the cloud above the cover.
2
"Tell your brother Aaron not to enter into the Holy of Holies, barging inside the curtain that's before the Atonement-Cover on the Chest whenever he feels like it, lest he die, because I am present in the Cloud over the Atonement-Cover.
3 No, but Aaron must enter the holy area as follows: with a bull from the herd as a purification offering and a ram as an entirely burned offering.
3
"This is the procedure for Aaron when he enters the Holy Place: He will bring a young bull for an Absolution-Offering and a ram for a Whole-Burnt-Offering;
4 Aaron must dress in a holy linen tunic and wear linen undergarments on his body. He must tie a linen sash around himself and wrap a linen turban around his head. These are holy clothes—Aaron will first bathe his body in water and then put them on.
4
he will put on the holy linen tunic and the linen underwear, tie the linen sash around him, and put on the linen turban. These are the sacred vestments so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on.
5 He will take from the Israelite community two male goats for a purification offering and one ram for an entirely burned offering.
5
Then from the Israelite community he will bring two male goats for an Absolution-Offering and a Whole-Burnt-Offering.
6 Aaron will offer the bull as a purification offering to make reconciliation for himself and his household.
6
"Aaron will offer the bull for his own Absolution-Offering in order to make atonement for himself and his household.
7 He will take the two male goats and place them before the LORD at the meeting tent's entrance.
7
Then he will set the two goats before God at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting
8 Aaron will cast lots over the two goats: one lot labeled "the LORD's" and the other lot labeled "Azazel's."
8
and cast lots over the two goats, one lot for God and the other lot for Azazel.
9 Aaron will present the goat selected by the LORD's lot and perform a purification offering with it.
9
He will offer the goat on which the lot to God falls as an Absolution-Offering.
10 But the goat selected by Azazel's lot will be left standing alive before the LORD in order to make reconciliation upon it by sending it away into the wilderness to Azazel.
10
The goat on which the lot for Azazel falls will be sent out into the wilderness to Azazel to make atonement.
11 Aaron will offer the bull for his purification offering to make reconciliation for himself and his household. He will slaughter the bull for his purification offering.
11
"Aaron will present his bull for an Absolution-Offering to make atonement for himself and his household. He will slaughter his bull for the Absolution-Offering.
12 Then he will take an incense pan full of burning coals from the altar, from before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground perfumed incense and bring them inside the inner curtain.
12
He will take a censer full of burning coals from the Altar before God and two handfuls of finely ground aromatic incense and bring them inside the curtain and
13 He will put the incense on the fire before the LORD so that the cloud of incense conceals the cover that is on top of the covenant document, or else he will die.
13
put the incense on the fire before God; the smoke of the incense will cover the Atonement-Cover which is over The Testimony so that he doesn't die.
14 He will take some of the bull's blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the cover from the east side. He will then sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times in front of the cover.
14
He will take some of the bull's blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the Atonement-Cover, then sprinkle the blood before the Atonement-Cover seven times.
15 Then he will slaughter the goat for the people's purification offering, bring the blood inside the inner curtain, and do with it as he did with the bull's blood: he will sprinkle it on the cover and in front of the cover.
15
"Next he will slaughter the goat designated as the Absolution-Offering for the people and bring the blood inside the curtain. He will repeat what he does with the bull's blood, sprinkling it on and before the Atonement-Cover.
16 In this way, he will make reconciliation for the inner holy area because of the pollution of the Israelites and because of their rebellious sins, as well as for all their other sins. Aaron must do the same for the meeting tent, which is with them among their pollution.
16
In this way he will make atonement for the Holy of Holies because of the uncleannesses of the Israelites, their acts of rebellion, and all their other sins. He will do the same thing for the Tent of Meeting which dwells among the people in the midst of their uncleanness.
17 No one can be in the meeting tent from the time Aaron enters to make reconciliation in the inner holy area until the time he comes out. He will make reconciliation for himself, for his household, and for the whole assembly of Israel.
17
There is to be no one in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Holy of Holies until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household, and the whole community of Israel.
18 Aaron will then go to the altar that is before the LORD and make reconciliation for it: He will take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on each of the altar's horns.
18
"Then he will come out to the Altar that is before God and make atonement for it. He will take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and smear it all around the four horns of the Altar.
19 He will sprinkle some of the blood on the altar with his finger seven times. In this way, he will purify it and make it holy again from the Israelites' pollution.
19
With his finger he will sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times to purify and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the Israelites.
20 When Aaron has finished reconciling the inner holy area, the rest of the meeting tent, and the altar, he will bring forward the live goat.
20
"When Aaron finishes making atonement for the Holy of Holies, the Tent of Meeting, and the Altar, he will bring up the live goat,
21 Aaron will press both his hands on its head and confess over it all the Israelites' offenses and all their rebellious sins, as well as all their other sins, putting all these on the goat's head. Then he will send it away into the wilderness with someone designated for the job.
21
lay both hands on the live goat's head, and confess all the iniquities of the People of Israel, all their acts of rebellion, all their sins. He will put all the sins on the goat's head and send it off into the wilderness, led out by a man standing by and ready.
22 The goat will carry on itself all their offenses to a desolate region, then the goat will be released into the wild.
22
The goat will carry all their iniquities to an empty wasteland; the man will let him loose out there in the wilderness.
23 After this, Aaron will enter the meeting tent, take off the linen clothes he was wearing when he entered the inner holy area, and will leave them there.
23
"Finally, Aaron will come into the Tent of Meeting and take off the linen clothes in which he dressed to enter the Holy of Holies and leave them there.
24 He will bathe his body in water in a holy place and dress in his priestly clothing. Then he will go out and perform the entirely burned offerings for himself and for the people. In this way, he will make reconciliation for himself and for the people.
24
He will bathe in water in a Holy Place, put on his priestly vestments, offer the Whole-Burnt-Offering for himself and the Whole-Burnt-Offering for the people, making atonement for himself and the people,
25 He will completely burn the fat of the purification offering on the altar.
25
and burn the fat of the Absolution-Offering on the Altar.
26 The one who set the goat free for Azazel must wash their clothes and bathe their body in water; after that they can return to the camp.
26
"The man who takes the goat out to Azazel in the wilderness then will wash his clothes and bathe himself with water. After that he will be permitted to come back into the camp.
27 The bull and the goat for the purification offerings, whose blood was brought in to make reconciliation in the inner holy area, will be taken outside the camp. Their hides, flesh, and dung will be burned with fire.
27
The bull for the Absolution-Offering and the goat for the Absolution-Offering, whose blood has been taken into the Holy of Holies to make atonement, are to be taken outside the camp and burned - their hides, their meat, and their entrails.
28 The person who burns them must wash their clothes and bathe their body in water; after that, they can return to the camp.
28
The man assigned to burn them up will then wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. Then he is free to come back into the camp.
29 This will be a permanent rule for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you must deny yourselves. You must not do any work—neither the citizen nor the immigrant who lives among you.
29
"This is standard practice for you, a perpetual ordinance. On the tenth day of the seventh month, both the citizen and the foreigner living with you are to enter into a solemn fast and refrain from all work,
30 On that day reconciliation will be made for you in order to cleanse you. You will be clean before the LORD from all your sins.
30
because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. In the presence of God you will be made clean of all your sins.
31 It will be a Sabbath of special rest for you, and you will deny yourselves. This is a permanent rule.
31
It is a Sabbath of all Sabbaths. You must fast. It is a perpetual ordinance.
32 The priest who is anointed and ordained to serve as priest after his father will perform the reconciliation, wearing the holy linen clothes. It was done just as the LORD commanded Moses.
32
"The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father is to make the atonement: He puts on the sacred linen garments;
33 He will reconcile the holiest part of the sanctuary and will do the same for the meeting tent and the altar. He will make reconciliation for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.
33
He purges the Holy of Holies by making atonement; He purges the Tent of Meeting and the Altar by making atonement; He makes atonement for the priests and all the congregation.
34 This will be a permanent rule for you, in order to make reconciliation for the Israelites from all their sins once a year.
34
"This is a perpetual ordinance for you: Once a year atonement is to be made for all the sins of the People of Israel." And Aaron did it, just as God commanded Moses.
