Luke 19:11-27

ESV 11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. MSG 11 While he had their attention, and because they were getting close to Jerusalem by this time and expectation was building that God's kingdom would appear any minute, he told this story: ESV 12 He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. MSG 12 "There was once a man descended from a royal house who needed to make a long trip back to headquarters to get authorization for his rule and then return. ESV 13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Engage in business until I come.' MSG 13 But first he called ten servants together, gave them each a sum of money, and instructed them, 'Operate with this until I return.' ESV 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' MSG 14 "But the citizens there hated him. So they sent a commission with a signed petition to oppose his rule: 'We don't want this man to rule us.' ESV 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. MSG 15 "When he came back bringing the authorization of his rule, he called those ten servants to whom he had given the money to find out how they had done. ESV 16 The first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.' MSG 16 "The first said, 'Master, I doubled your money.' ESV 17 And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' MSG 17 "He said, 'Good servant! Great work! Because you've been trustworthy in this small job, I'm making you governor of ten towns.' ESV 18 And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made five minas.' MSG 18 "The second said, 'Master, I made a fifty percent profit on your money.' ESV 19 And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' MSG 19 "He said, 'I'm putting you in charge of five towns.' ESV 20 Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; MSG 20 "The next servant said, 'Master, here's your money safe and sound. I kept it hidden in the cellar. ESV 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.' MSG 21 To tell you the truth, I was a little afraid. I know you have high standards and hate sloppiness, and don't suffer fools gladly.' ESV 22 He said to him, 'I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? MSG 22 "He said, 'You're right that I don't suffer fools gladly - and you've acted the fool! ESV 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' MSG 23 Why didn't you at least invest the money in securities so I would have gotten a little interest on it?' ESV 24 And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' MSG 24 "Then he said to those standing there, 'Take the money from him and give it to the servant who doubled my stake.' ESV 25 And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas!' MSG 25 "They said, 'But Master, he already has double . . .' ESV 26 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. MSG 26 "He said, 'That's what I mean: Risk your life and get more than you ever dreamed of. Play it safe and end up holding the bag. ESV 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.'" MSG 27 "'As for these enemies of mine who petitioned against my rule, clear them out of here. I don't want to see their faces around here again.'"
