Luke 1:1-9

KJV 1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, NIV 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, KJV 2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; NIV 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. KJV 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, NIV 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, KJV 4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. NIV 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. KJV 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. NIV 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. KJV 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. NIV 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. KJV 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. NIV 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. KJV 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, NIV 8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, KJV 9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. NIV 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
