Luke 20

KJV 1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, ESV 1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up KJV 2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? ESV 2 and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority." KJV 3 And he answered and said unto them,I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: ESV 3 He answered them, "I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, KJV 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? ESV 4 was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?" KJV 5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? ESV 5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?' KJV 6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. ESV 6 But if we say, 'From man,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet." KJV 7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. ESV 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. KJV 8 And Jesus said unto them,Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. ESV 8 And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things." KJV 9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable;A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. ESV 9 And he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. KJV 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. ESV 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. KJV 11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. ESV 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. KJV 12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. ESV 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. KJV 13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. ESV 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.' KJV 14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. ESV 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.' KJV 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? ESV 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? KJV 16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. ESV 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "Surely not!" KJV 17 And he beheld them, and said,What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? ESV 17 But he looked directly at them and said, "What then is this that is written: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'? KJV 18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ESV 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him." KJV 19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. ESV 19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. KJV 20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. ESV 20 So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. KJV 21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: ESV 21 So they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. KJV 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? ESV 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?" KJV 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,Why tempt ye me? ESV 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, KJV 24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's. ESV 24 "Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." KJV 25 And he said unto them,Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. ESV 25 He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." KJV 26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. ESV 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent. KJV 27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, ESV 27 There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, KJV 28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. ESV 28 and they asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. KJV 29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. ESV 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. KJV 30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. ESV 30 And the second KJV 31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. ESV 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. KJV 32 Last of all the woman died also. ESV 32 Afterward the woman also died. KJV 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. ESV 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife." KJV 34 And Jesus answering said unto them,The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: ESV 34 And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, KJV 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: ESV 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, KJV 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. ESV 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. KJV 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. ESV 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. KJV 38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. ESV 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him." KJV 39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. ESV 39 Then some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well." KJV 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. ESV 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question. KJV 41 And he said unto them,How say they that Christ is David's son? ESV 41 But he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is David's son? KJV 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, ESV 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, "'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, KJV 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. ESV 43 until I make your enemies your footstool.' KJV 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? ESV 44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?" KJV 45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, ESV 45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, KJV 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; ESV 46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, KJV 47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. ESV 47 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

Luke 22:1-38

KJV 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. ESV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. KJV 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. ESV 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people. KJV 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. ESV 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. KJV 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. ESV 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. KJV 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. ESV 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. KJV 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. ESV 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. KJV 7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. ESV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. KJV 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying,Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. ESV 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it." KJV 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? ESV 9 They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?" KJV 10 And he said unto them,Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. ESV 10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters KJV 11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? ESV 11 and tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' KJV 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. ESV 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there." KJV 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. ESV 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. KJV 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. ESV 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. KJV 15 And he said unto them,With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: ESV 15 And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. KJV 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said,Take this, and divide it among yourselves: ESV 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. KJV 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying,This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. ESV 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" KJV 23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. ESV 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. KJV 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. ESV 24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ESV 25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. KJV 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. ESV 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. KJV 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. ESV 35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." KJV 36 Then said he unto them,But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. ESV 36 He said to them, "But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. KJV 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
