Luke 22

WBT 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. NIV 1 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, WBT 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him: for they feared the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. WBT 3 Then Satan entered into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. WBT 4 And he went, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. WBT 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. WBT 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of the multitude. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. WBT 7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. WBT 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare for us the passover, that we may eat. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” WBT 9 And they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? NIV 9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. WBT 10 And he said to them, Behold, when ye have entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth. NIV 10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, WBT 11 And ye shall say to the master of the house, The Master saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I may eat the passover with my disciples? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ WBT 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. NIV 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.” WBT 13 And they went and found as he had said to them: and they made ready the passover. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. WBT 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. WBT 15 And he said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. WBT 16 For I say to you, I will not any more eat of it until it shall be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” WBT 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide [it] among yourselves. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. WBT 18 For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” WBT 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke [it], and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” WBT 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup [is] the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. WBT 21 But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me [is] with me on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. WBT 22 And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” WBT 23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. WBT 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. NIV 24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. WBT 25 And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them, are called benefactors. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. WBT 26 But ye [shall] not [be] so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. WBT 27 For which [is] greater, he that sitteth at table, or he that serveth? [is] not he that sitteth at table? but I am among you as he that serveth. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. WBT 28 Ye are they who have continued with me in my temptations. NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. WBT 29 And I appoint to you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed to me; NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, WBT 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. WBT 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat: NIV 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. WBT 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” WBT 33 And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee both into prison, and to death. NIV 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” WBT 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, before thou wilt thrice deny that thou knowest me. NIV 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” WBT 35 And he said to them, When I sent you without purse, and sack, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”“Nothing,” they answered. WBT 36 Then said he to them, But now he that hath a purse, let him take [it], and likewise [his] sack: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. NIV 36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. WBT 37 For I say to you, that this which is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. NIV 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” WBT 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here [are] two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. NIV 38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied. WBT 39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. WBT 40 And when he was at the place, he said to them, Pray, that ye enter not into temptation. NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” WBT 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed. NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, WBT 42 Saying, Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done. NIV 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” WBT 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. WBT 44 And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. WBT 45 And when he arose from prayer, and had come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow: NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. WBT 46 And said to them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. NIV 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” WBT 47 And while he was yet speaking, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, WBT 48 But Jesus said to him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” WBT 49 When they who were about him, saw what would follow, they said to him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? NIV 49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” WBT 50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. WBT 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. WBT 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to him, Are ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staffs? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? WBT 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.” WBT 54 Then they took him, and led [him], and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed at a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. WBT 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. NIV 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. WBT 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” WBT 57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. NIV 57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. WBT 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied. WBT 59 And about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him; for he is a Galilean. NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” WBT 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. WBT 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the cock shall crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. WBT 67 Saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not believe. NIV 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, WBT 68 And if I also ask [you], ye will not answer me, nor let [me] go. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. WBT 69 Hereafter will the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” WBT 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said to them, Ye say that I am. NIV 70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” WBT 71 And they said, What need have we of any further testimony? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth. NIV 71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
