GNT

1 But on the first day of the week, at dawn, they came to the place where his body had been put, taking the spices which they had got ready.
1 Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared.
2 And they saw that the stone had been rolled away.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb,
3 And they went in, but the body of the Lord Jesus was not there.
3 so they went in; but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And while they were in doubt about it, they saw two men in shining clothing by them:
4 They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly two men in bright shining clothes stood by them.
5 And while their faces were bent down to the earth in fear, these said to them, Why are you looking for the living among the dead?
5 Full of fear, the women bowed down to the ground, as the men said to them, "Why are you looking among the dead for one who is alive?
6 He is not here, he has come back to life: have in mind what he said to you when he was still in Galilee, saying,
6 He is not here; he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was in Galilee:
7 The Son of man will be given up into the hands of evil-doers, and be put to death on the cross, and on the third day he will come back to life.
7 "The Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and three days later rise to life.' "
8 And his words came back into their minds,
8 Then the women remembered his words,
9 And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.
9 returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven disciples and all the rest.
10 Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles.
10 The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; they and the other women with them told these things to the apostles.
11 But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them.
11 But the apostles thought that what the women said was nonsense, and they did not believe them.
12 But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place.
12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; he bent down and saw the grave cloths but nothing else. Then he went back home amazed at what had happened.
13 And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
13 On that same day two of Jesus' followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,
14 And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place.
14 and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened.
15 And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them.
15 As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them;
16 But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him.
16 they saw him, but somehow did not recognize him.
17 And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go?
17 Jesus said to them, "What are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?" They stood still, with sad faces.
18 Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time?
18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have been happening there these last few days?"
19 And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people:
19 "What things?" he asked. "The things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth," they answered. "This man was a prophet and was considered by God and by all the people to be powerful in everything he said and did.
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross.
20 Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and he was crucified.
21 But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place;
21 And we had hoped that he would be the one who was going to set Israel free! Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened.
22 And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put,
22 Some of the women of our group surprised us; they went at dawn to the tomb,
23 And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living.
23 but could not find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive.
24 And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see.
24 Some of our group went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him."
25 And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said.
25 Then Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said!
26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory?
26 Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?"
27 And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself.
27 And Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets.
28 And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on;
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther;
29 But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them.
29 but they held him back, saying, "Stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark." So he went in to stay with them.
30 And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them.
30 He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them.
31 And then their eyes were open, and they had knowledge of him, but he went from their view.
31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning in us while he was talking to us on the way, making clear to us the holy Writings?
32 They said to each other, "Wasn't it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"
33 And that very hour they got up and went back to Jerusalem, where the eleven and the others had come together.
33 They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others
34 And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him.
34 and saying, "The Lord is risen indeed! He has appeared to Simon!"
35 And they gave an account of the things which had taken place on the way, and how, when he gave them bread, they had knowledge of him.
35 The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread.
36 And while they were saying these things, he himself was among them, and said to them, Peace be with you!
36 While the two were telling them this, suddenly the Lord himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
37 But they were full of fear, being of the opinion that they were seeing a spirit.
37 They were terrified, thinking that they were seeing a ghost.
38 And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why are your hearts full of doubt?
38 But he said to them, "Why are you alarmed? Why are these doubts coming up in your minds?
39 See; my hands and my feet: it is I myself; put your hands on me and make certain; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.
39 Look at my hands and my feet, and see that it is I myself. Feel me, and you will know, for a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you can see I have."
40 And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his feet.
40 He said this and showed them his hands and his feet.
41 And because, for joy and wonder, they were still in doubt, he said to them, Have you any food here?
41 They still could not believe, they were so full of joy and wonder; so he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
42 And they gave him a bit of cooked fish.
42 They gave him a piece of cooked fish,
43 And before their eyes he took a meal.
43 which he took and ate in their presence.
44 And he said to them, These are the words which I said to you when I was still with you, how it was necessary for all the things which are in the writings of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms about me, to be put into effect.
44 Then he said to them, "These are the very things I told you about while I was still with you: everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the writings of the prophets, and the Psalms had to come true."
45 Then he made the holy Writings clear to their minds.
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
46 And he said to them, So it is in the Writings that the Christ would undergo death, and come back to life again on the third day;
46 and said to them, "This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later,
47 And that teaching about a change of heart and forgiveness of sins is to be given to Jerusalem first and to all nations in his name.
47 and in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 And now I will send to you what my father has undertaken to give you, but do not go from the town, till the power from heaven comes to you.
49 And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you."
50 And he took them out till they were near Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he gave them a blessing.
50 Then he led them out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them.
51 And while he was doing so, he went from them and was taken up into heaven.
51 As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven.
52 And they gave him worship and went back to Jerusalem with great joy.
52 They worshiped him and went back into Jerusalem, filled with great joy,

53 and spent all their time in the Temple giving thanks to God.
