Luke 24:28-53

GNT 28 As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther; NIV 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. GNT 29 but they held him back, saying, "Stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark." So he went in to stay with them. NIV 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. GNT 30 He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them. NIV 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. GNT 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. NIV 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. GNT 32 They said to each other, "Wasn't it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" NIV 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” GNT 33 They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others NIV 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together GNT 34 and saying, "The Lord is risen indeed! He has appeared to Simon!" NIV 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” GNT 35 The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread. NIV 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. GNT 36 While the two were telling them this, suddenly the Lord himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." NIV 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” GNT 37 They were terrified, thinking that they were seeing a ghost. NIV 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. GNT 38 But he said to them, "Why are you alarmed? Why are these doubts coming up in your minds? NIV 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? GNT 39 Look at my hands and my feet, and see that it is I myself. Feel me, and you will know, for a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you can see I have." NIV 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” GNT 40 He said this and showed them his hands and his feet. NIV 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. GNT 41 They still could not believe, they were so full of joy and wonder; so he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" NIV 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” GNT 42 They gave him a piece of cooked fish, NIV 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, GNT 43 which he took and ate in their presence. NIV 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. GNT 44 Then he said to them, "These are the very things I told you about while I was still with you: everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the writings of the prophets, and the Psalms had to come true." NIV 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” GNT 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, NIV 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. GNT 46 and said to them, "This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later, NIV 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, GNT 47 and in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. NIV 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. GNT 48 You are witnesses of these things. NIV 48 You are witnesses of these things. GNT 49 And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you." NIV 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” GNT 50 Then he led them out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them. NIV 50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. GNT 51 As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven. NIV 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. GNT 52 They worshiped him and went back into Jerusalem, filled with great joy, NIV 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. GNT 53 and spent all their time in the Temple giving thanks to God. NIV 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
