Luke 6

1 And it came to pass on the second first sabbath that, as he went through the corn fields, his disciples plucked the ears and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
1 Once, on a day of worship, Jesus was walking through some grainfields. His disciples were picking the heads of grain, removing the husks, and eating the grain.
2 And some of the Pharisees said to them: Why do you that which is not lawful on the sabbath days?
2 Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are your disciples doing something that is not right to do on the day of worship?"
3 And Jesus answering them, said: Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry and they that were with him:
3 Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his men were hungry?
4 How he went into the house of God and took and ate the bread of proposition and gave to them that were with him, which is not lawful to eat but only for the priests?
4 Haven't you read how he went into the house of God, ate the bread of the presence, and gave some of it to the men who were with him? He had no right to eat those loaves. Only the priests have that right."
5 And he said to them: The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
5 Then he added, "The Son of Man has authority over the day of worship."
6 And it came to pass also, on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught. And there was a man whose right hand was withered.
6 On another day of worship, Jesus went into a synagogue to teach. A man whose right hand was paralyzed was there.
7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched if he would heal on the sabbath: that they might find an accusation against him.
7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely. They wanted to see whether he would heal the man on the day of worship so that they could find a way to accuse him of doing something wrong.
8 But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand: Arise and stand forth in the midst. And rising he stood forth.
8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Get up, and stand in the center [of the synagogue]!" The man got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them: I ask you, if it be lawful on the sabbath days to do good or to do evil? To save life or to destroy?
9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you--what is the right thing to do on a day of worship: to do good or evil, to give a person his health or to destroy it?"
10 And looking round about on them all, he said to the man: Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth. And his hand was restored.
10 He looked around at all of them and then said to the man, "Hold out your hand." The man did so, and his hand became normal again.
11 And they were filled with madness: and they talked one with another, what they might do to Jesus.
11 The scribes and Pharisees were furious and began to discuss with each other what they could do to Jesus.
12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray: and he passed the whole night in the prayer of God.
12 At that time Jesus went to a mountain to pray. He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
13 And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples: and he chose twelve of them (whom also he named apostles):
13 When it was day, he called his disciples. He chose twelve of them and called them apostles.
14 Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
14 They were Simon (whom Jesus named Peter) and Simon's brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,
15 Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the Zealot),
16 And Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.

17 And coming down with them, he stood in a plain place: and the company of his disciples and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast, both of Tyre and Sidon,
17 Jesus came down from the mountain with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples and many other people were there. They had come from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
18 Who were come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.
18 They wanted to hear him and be cured of their diseases. Those who were tormented by evil spirits were cured.
19 And all the multitude sought to touch him: for virtue went out from him and healed all.
19 The entire crowd was trying to touch him because power was coming from him and curing all of them.
20 And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said: Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
20 Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "Blessed are those who are poor. The kingdom of God is theirs.
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for you shall laugh.
21 Blessed are those who are hungry. They will be satisfied. Blessed are those who are crying. They will laugh.
22 Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you and shall reproach you and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
22 Blessed are you when people hate you, avoid you, insult you, and slander you because you are committed to the Son of Man.
23 Be glad in that day and rejoice: for behold, your reward is great in heaven, For according to these things did their fathers to the prophets.
23 Rejoice then, and be very happy! You have a great reward in heaven. That's the way their ancestors treated the prophets.
24 But woe to you that are rich: for you have your consolation.
24 "But how horrible it will be for those who are rich. They have had their comfort.
25 Woe to you that are filled: for you shall hunger. Woe to you that now laugh: for you shall mourn and weep.
25 How horrible it will be for those who are well-fed. They will be hungry. How horrible it will be for those who are laughing. They will mourn and cry.
26 Woe to you when men shall bless you: for according to these things did their fathers to the false prophets.
26 How horrible it will be for you when everyone says nice things about you. That's the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.
27 But I say to you that hear: Love your enemies. Do good to them that hate you.
27 "But I tell everyone who is listening: Love your enemies. Be kind to those who hate you.
28 Bless them that curse you and pray for them that calumniate you.
28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who insult you.
29 And to him that striketh thee on the one cheek, offer also the other. And him that taketh away from thee thy cloak, forbid not to take thy coat also.
29 If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other cheek as well. If someone takes your coat, don't stop him from taking your shirt.
30 Give to every one that asketh thee: and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again.
30 Give to everyone who asks you for something. If someone takes what is yours, don't insist on getting it back.
31 And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them in like manner.
31 "Do for other people everything you want them to do for you.
32 And if you love them that love you, what thanks are to you? For sinners also love those that love them.
32 "If you love those who love you, do you deserve any thanks for that? Even sinners love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks are to you? For sinners also do this.
33 If you help those who help you, do you deserve any thanks for that? Sinners do that too.
34 And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks are to you? For sinners also lend to sinners, for to receive as much.
34 If you lend anything to those from whom you expect to get something back, do you deserve any thanks for that? Sinners also lend to sinners to get back what they lend.
35 But love ye your enemies: do good, and lend, hoping for nothing thereby: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest. For he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil.
35 Rather, love your enemies, help them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then you will have a great reward. You will be the children of the Most High God. After all, he is kind to unthankful and evil people.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
36 Be merciful as your Father is merciful.
37 Judge not: and you shall not be judged. Condemn not: and you shall not be condemned. Forgive: and you shall be forgiven.
37 "Stop judging, and you will never be judged. Stop condemning, and you will never be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
38 Give: and it shall be given to you: good measure and pressed down and shaken together and running over shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you shall mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.
38 Give, and you will receive. A large quantity, pressed together, shaken down, and running over will be put into your pocket. The standards you use for others will be applied to you."
39 And he spoke also to them a similitude: Can the blind lead the blind? Do they not both fall into the ditch?
39 Jesus also gave them this illustration: "Can one blind person lead another? Won't both fall into the same pit?
40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect, if he be as his master.
40 A student is no better than his teacher. But everyone who is well-trained will be like his teacher.
41 And why seest thou the mote in thy brother’s eye: but the beam that is in thy own eye thou considerest not?
41 "Why do you see the piece of sawdust in another believer's eye and not notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
42 Or how canst thou say to thy brother: Brother, let me pull the mote out of thy eye, when thou thyself seest not the beam in thy own eye? Hypocrite, cast first the beam out of thy own eye: and then shalt thou see clearly to take out the mote from thy brother’s eye.
42 How can you say to another believer, 'Friend, let me take the piece of sawdust out of your eye,' when you don't see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye. Then you will see clearly to remove the piece of sawdust from another believer's eye.
43 For there is no good tree that bringeth forth evil fruit: nor an evil tree that bringeth forth good fruit.
43 "A good tree doesn't produce rotten fruit, and a rotten tree doesn't produce good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by its fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns: nor from a bramble bush do they gather the grape.
44 Each tree is known by its fruit. You don't pick figs from thorny plants or grapes from a thornbush.
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
45 Good people do the good that is in them. But evil people do the evil that is in them. The things people say come from inside them.
46 And why call you me, Lord, Lord; and do not the things which I say?
46 "Why do you call me Lord but don't do what I tell you?
47 Every one that cometh to me and heareth my words and doth them, I will shew you to whom he is like.
47 "I will show you what everyone who comes to me, hears what I say, and obeys it is like.
48 He is like to a man building a house, who digged deep and laid the foundation upon a rock. And when a flood came, the stream beat vehemently upon that house: and it could not shake it: for it was founded on a rock.
48 He is like a person who dug down to bedrock to lay the foundation of his home. When a flood came, the floodwaters pushed against that house. But the house couldn't be washed away because it had a good foundation.
49 But he that heareth and doth not is like to a man building his house upon the earth without a foundation: against which the stream beat vehemently. And immediately it fell: and the ruin of that house was great.
49 The person who hears [what I say] but doesn't obey it is like someone who built a house on the ground without any foundation. The floodwaters pushed against it, and that house quickly collapsed and was destroyed."
