Mark 13

GNTA 1 As Jesus was leaving the Temple, one of his disciples said, "Look, Teacher! What wonderful stones and buildings!" NIV 1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” GNTA 2 Jesus answered, "You see these great buildings? Not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one of them will be thrown down." NIV 2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” GNTA 3 Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, across from the Temple, when Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him in private. NIV 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, GNTA 4 "Tell us when this will be," they said, "and tell us what will happen to show that the time has come for all these things to take place." NIV 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” GNTA 5 Jesus said to them, "Watch out, and don't let anyone fool you. NIV 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. GNTA 6 Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, "I am he!' and they will fool many people. NIV 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. GNTA 7 And don't be troubled when you hear the noise of battles close by and news of battles far away. Such things must happen, but they do not mean that the end has come. NIV 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. GNTA 8 Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be earthquakes everywhere, and there will be famines. These things are like the first pains of childbirth. NIV 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. GNTA 9 "You yourselves must watch out. You will be arrested and taken to court. You will be beaten in the synagogues; you will stand before rulers and kings for my sake to tell them the Good News. NIV 9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. GNTA 10 But before the end comes, the gospel must be preached to all peoples. NIV 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. GNTA 11 And when you are arrested and taken to court, do not worry ahead of time about what you are going to say; when the time comes, say whatever is then given to you. For the words you speak will not be yours; they will come from the Holy Spirit. NIV 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. GNTA 12 Men will hand over their own brothers to be put to death, and fathers will do the same to their children. Children will turn against their parents and have them put to death. NIV 12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. GNTA 13 Everyone will hate you because of me. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved. NIV 13 Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. GNTA 14 "You will see "The Awful Horror' standing in the place where he should not be." (Note to the reader: understand what this means!) "Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills. NIV 14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’standing where itoes not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. GNTA 15 Someone who is on the roof of a house must not lose time by going down into the house to get anything to take along. NIV 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. GNTA 16 Someone who is in the field must not go back to the house for a cloak. NIV 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. GNTA 17 How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! NIV 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! GNTA 18 Pray to God that these things will not happen in the winter! NIV 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, GNTA 19 For the trouble of those days will be far worse than any the world has ever known from the very beginning when God created the world until the present time. Nor will there ever be anything like it again. NIV 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. GNTA 20 But the Lord has reduced the number of those days; if he had not, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, he has reduced those days. NIV 20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. GNTA 21 "Then, if anyone says to you, "Look, here is the Messiah!' or, "Look, there he is!' - do not believe it. NIV 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. GNTA 22 For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear. They will perform miracles and wonders in order to deceive even God's chosen people, if possible. NIV 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. GNTA 23 Be on your guard! I have told you everything ahead of time. NIV 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. GNTA 24 "In the days after that time of trouble the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, NIV 24 “But in those days, following that distress, “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; GNTA 25 the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. NIV 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ GNTA 26 Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in the clouds with great power and glory. NIV 26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. GNTA 27 He will send the angels out to the four corners of the earth to gather God's chosen people from one end of the world to the other. NIV 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. GNTA 28 "Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. NIV 28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. GNTA 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin. NIV 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that itis near, right at the door. GNTA 30 Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died. NIV 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. GNTA 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. NIV 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. GNTA 32 "No one knows, however, when that day or hour will come - neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; only the Father knows. NIV 32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. GNTA 33 Be on watch, be alert, for you do not know when the time will come. NIV 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. GNTA 34 It will be like a man who goes away from home on a trip and leaves his servants in charge, after giving to each one his own work to do and after telling the doorkeeper to keep watch. NIV 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. GNTA 35 Watch, then, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming - it might be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or at sunrise. NIV 35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. GNTA 36 If he comes suddenly, he must not find you asleep. NIV 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. GNTA 37 What I say to you, then, I say to all: Watch!" NIV 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”
