GNT

1 It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes made designs how they might take him by deceit and put him to death:
1 It was now two days before the Festival of Passover and Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking for a way to arrest Jesus secretly and put him to death.
2 But they said, Not while the feast is going on, for fear there may be trouble among the people.
2 "We must not do it during the festival," they said, "or the people might riot."
3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, seated at table, there came a woman with a bottle of perfumed oil of great price; and when the bottle was broken she put the perfume on his head.
3 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a dreaded skin disease. While Jesus was eating, a woman came in with an alabaster jar full of a very expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus' head.
4 But some of them were angry among themselves, saying, For what purpose has this oil been wasted?
4 Some of the people there became angry and said to one another, "What was the use of wasting the perfume?
5 We might have got more than three hundred pence for it, and given the money to the poor. And they said things against her among themselves.
5 It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor!" And they criticized her harshly.
6 But Jesus said, Let her be; why are you troubling her? she has done a kind act to me.
6 But Jesus said, "Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a fine and beautiful thing for me.
7 The poor you have ever with you, and whenever you have the desire you may do them good: but me you have not for ever.
7 You will always have poor people with you, and any time you want to, you can help them. But you will not always have me.
8 She has done what she was able: she has put oil on my body to make it ready for its last resting-place.
8 She did what she could; she poured perfume on my body to prepare it ahead of time for burial.
9 And truly I say to you, Wherever the good news goes out through all the earth, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her.
9 Now, I assure you that wherever the gospel is preached all over the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."
10 And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, so that he might give him up to them.
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them.
11 And hearing what he said, they were glad, and gave him their word to make him a payment of money. And he took thought how he might best give him up to them.
11 They were pleased to hear what he had to say, and promised to give him money. So Judas started looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them.
12 And on the first day of unleavened bread, when the Passover lamb is put to death, his disciples said to him, Where are we to go and make ready for you to take the Passover meal?
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day the lambs for the Passover meal were killed, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and get the Passover meal ready for you?"
13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, Go into the town, and there will come to you a man with a vessel of water: go after him;
13 Then Jesus sent two of them with these instructions: "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him
14 And wherever he goes in, say to the owner of the house, The Master says, Where is my guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples?
14 to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: "The Teacher says, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?'
15 And he will take you up himself to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready for us.
15 Then he will show you a large upstairs room, fixed up and furnished, where you will get everything ready for us."
16 And the disciples went out and came into the town, and saw that it was as he had said: and they made ready the Passover.
16 The disciples left, went to the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.
17 When it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve disciples.
18 And while they were seated taking food, Jesus said, Truly I say to you, One of you will be false to me, one who is taking food with me.
18 While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, "I tell you that one of you will betray me - one who is eating with me."
19 They were sad, and said to him one by one, Is it I?
19 The disciples were upset and began to ask him, one after the other, "Surely you don't mean me, do you?"
20 And he said to them, It is one of the twelve, one who is putting his bread with me into the same plate.
20 Jesus answered, "It will be one of you twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me.
21 The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but cursed is that man through whom the Son of man is given up! It would have been well for that man if he had never been given birth.
21 The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will; but how terrible for that man who will betray the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born!"
22 And while they were taking food, he took bread, and after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to them, and said, Take it: this is my body.
22 While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. "Take it," he said, "this is my body."
23 And he took a cup, and when he had given praise, he gave it to them: and they all had a drink from it.
23 Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and handed it to them; and they all drank from it.
24 And he said to them, This is my blood of the testament, which is given for men.
24 Jesus said, "This is my blood which is poured out for many, my blood which seals God's covenant.
25 Truly I say to you, I will take no more of the fruit of the vine till the day when I take it new in the kingdom of God.
25 I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new wine in the Kingdom of God."
26 And after a song of praise to God they went out to the Mountain of Olives.
26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 And Jesus said to them, You will all be turned away from me: for it is in the Writings, I will put the keeper of the sheep to death, and the sheep will be put to flight.
27 Jesus said to them, "All of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, "God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep will all be scattered.'
28 But after I have come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee.
28 But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you."
29 But Peter said to him, Though the others may be turned away from you, I will not.
29 Peter answered, "I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!"
30 And Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you that you, today, even this night, before the cock's second cry, will say three times that you have no knowledge of me.
30 Jesus said to Peter, "I tell you that before the rooster crows two times tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me."
31 But he said with passion, If I have to be put to death with you, I will not be false to you. And they all said the same.
31 Peter answered even more strongly, "I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!" And all the other disciples said the same thing.
32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Be seated here while I say a prayer.
32 They came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and grief and great trouble came on him.
33 He took Peter, James, and John with him. Distress and anguish came over him,
34 And he said to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: be here a little time, and keep watch.
34 and he said to them, "The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch."
35 And he went forward a little, and falling down on the earth, made request that, if possible, the hour might go from him.
35 He went a little farther on, threw himself on the ground, and prayed that, if possible, he might not have to go through that time of suffering.
36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me: but even so let not my pleasure, but yours be done.
36 "Father," he prayed, "my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."
37 And he came, and saw them sleeping, and said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? were you not able to keep watch one hour?
37 Then he returned and found the three disciples asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Weren't you able to stay awake for even one hour?"
38 Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test; the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble.
38 And he said to them, "Keep watch, and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
39 And again he went away, and said a prayer, using the same words.
39 He went away once more and prayed, saying the same words.
40 And again he came and saw them sleeping, because their eyes were very tired; and they had nothing to say in answer.
40 Then he came back to the disciples and found them asleep; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to say to him.
41 And he came the third time, and said to them, Go on sleeping now and take your rest: it is enough; the hour has come; see, the Son of man is given up into the hands of evil men.
41 When he came back the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over to the power of sinners.
42 Get up, let us be going; see, he who gives me up is near.
42 Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me!"
43 And straight away, while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great band with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and those in authority.
43 Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs and sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders.
44 Now he who had been false to him had given them a sign, saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he; take him, and get him away safely.
44 The traitor had given the crowd a signal: "The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him and take him away under guard."
45 And when he had come, he went straight to him and said, Master; and gave him a kiss.
45 As soon as Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus and said, "Teacher!" and kissed him.
46 And they put their hands on him, and took him.
46 So they arrested Jesus and held him tight.
47 But a certain one of those who were near took out his sword, and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear.
47 But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck at the High Priest's slave, cutting off his ear.
48 And Jesus said to them, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks to take me?
48 Then Jesus spoke up and said to them, "Did you have to come with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were an outlaw?
49 I was with you every day in the Temple teaching, and you did not take me; but this is done so that the Writings may come true.
49 Day after day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true."
50 And they all went away from him in fear.
50 Then all the disciples left him and ran away.
51 And a certain young man went after him, with only a linen cloth about his body; and they put their hands on him;
51 A certain young man, dressed only in a linen cloth, was following Jesus. They tried to arrest him,
52 But he got away unclothed, without the linen cloth.
52 but he ran away naked, leaving the cloth behind.
53 And they took Jesus away to the high priest; and there came together with him all the chief priests and those in authority and the scribes.
53 Then Jesus was taken to the High Priest's house, where all the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the Law were gathering.
54 And Peter had come after him at a distance, even into the house of the high priest; and he was seated with the captains, warming himself in the light of the fire.
54 Peter followed from a distance and went into the courtyard of the High Priest's house. There he sat down with the guards, keeping himself warm by the fire.
55 Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were looking for witness against Jesus so that they might put him to death; and they were unable to get any.
55 The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they could not find any.
56 For a number gave false witness against him and their witness was not in agreement.
56 Many witnesses told lies against Jesus, but their stories did not agree.
57 Then some got up and gave false witness against him, saying,
57 Then some men stood up and told this lie against Jesus:
58 He said in our hearing, I will put an end to this Temple which is made with hands, and in three days I will make another without hands.
58 "We heard him say, "I will tear down this Temple which men have made, and after three days I will build one that is not made by men.' "
59 And even so their witness was not in agreement.
59 Not even they, however, could make their stories agree.
60 And the high priest got up in the middle of them, and said to Jesus, Do you say nothing in answer? what is it which these say against you?
60 The High Priest stood up in front of them all and questioned Jesus, "Have you no answer to the accusation they bring against you?"
61 But he kept quiet and said nothing. Again the high priest questioning him said, Are you the Christ, the son of the Holy One?
61 But Jesus kept quiet and would not say a word. Again the High Priest questioned him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?"
62 And Jesus said, I am: and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.
62 "I am," answered Jesus, "and you will all see the Son of Man seated at the right side of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of heaven!"
63 And the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, What more need have we of witnesses?
63 The High Priest tore his robes and said, "We don't need any more witnesses!
64 His words against God have come to your ears: what is your opinion? And they all said it was right for him to be put to death.
64 You heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?" They all voted against him: he was guilty and should be put to death.
65 And some put shame on him and, covering his face, gave him blows and said to him, Now say what is to come: and the captains took him and gave him blows with their hands.
65 Some of them began to spit on Jesus, and they blindfolded him and hit him. "Guess who hit you!" they said. And the guards took him and slapped him.
66 And while Peter was down in the open square of the building, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came;
66 Peter was still down in the courtyard when one of the High Priest's servant women came by.
67 And seeing Peter warming himself by the fire, she gave him a look, and said, You were with this Nazarene, even Jesus.
67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked straight at him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus of Nazareth."
68 But he said, I have no knowledge of him, or of what you are saying: and he went out into the doorway; and there came the cry of a cock.
68 But he denied it. "I don't know . . . I don't understand what you are talking about," he answered, and went out into the passageway. Just then a rooster crowed.
69 And the girl saw him, and said again to those who were near, This is one of them.
69 The servant woman saw him there and began to repeat to the bystanders, "He is one of them!"
70 But again he said it was not so. And after a little time, again those who were near said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; for you are a Galilaean.
70 But Peter denied it again. A little while later the bystanders accused Peter again, "You can't deny that you are one of them, because you, too, are from Galilee."
71 But, with curses and oaths, he said, I have no knowledge of the man about whom you are talking.
71 Then Peter said, "I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know the man you are talking about!"
72 And in the same minute, the cock gave a second cry. And it came to Peter's mind how Jesus had said to him, Before the cock's second cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And at this thought he was overcome with weeping.
72 Just then a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, "Before the rooster crows two times, you will say three times that you do not know me." And he broke down and cried.
