Mark 4

NLT

MSG

1 Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore.
1 He went back to teaching by the sea. A crowd built up to such a great size that he had to get into an offshore boat, using the boat as a pulpit as the people pushed to the water's edge.
2 He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
2 He taught by using stories, many stories.
3 “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed.
3 "Listen. What do you make of this? A farmer planted seed.
4 As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it.
4 As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road and birds ate it.
5 Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow.
5 Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn't put down roots,
6 But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died.
6 so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly.
7 Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain.
7 Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled among the weeds and nothing came of it.
8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
8 Some fell on good earth and came up with a flourish, producing a harvest exceeding his wildest dreams.
9 Then he said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
9 "Are you listening to this? Really listening?"
10 Later, when Jesus was alone with the twelve disciples and with the others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables meant.
10 When they were off by themselves, those who were close to him, along with the Twelve, asked about the stories.
11 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders,
11 He told them, "You've been given insight into God's kingdom - you know how it works. But to those who can't see it yet, everything comes in stories, creating readiness, nudging them toward receptive insight.
12 so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to me and be forgiven.’ ”
12 These are people - Whose eyes are open but don't see a thing, Whose ears are open but don't understand a word, Who avoid making an about-face and getting forgiven."
13 Then Jesus said to them, “If you can’t understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables?
13 He continued, "Do you see how this story works? All my stories work this way.
14 The farmer plants seed by taking God’s word to others.
14 "The farmer plants the Word.
15 The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it away.
15 Some people are like the seed that falls on the hardened soil of the road. No sooner do they hear the Word than Satan snatches away what has been planted in them.
16 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy.
16 "And some are like the seed that lands in the gravel. When they first hear the Word, they respond with great enthusiasm.
17 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.
17 But there is such shallow soil of character that when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.
18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word,
18 "The seed cast in the weeds represents the ones who hear the kingdom news
19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.
19 but are overwhelmed with worries about all the things they have to do and all the things they want to get. The stress strangles what they heard, and nothing comes of it.
20 And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
20 "But the seed planted in the good earth represents those who hear the Word, embrace it, and produce a harvest beyond their wildest dreams."
21 Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine.
21 Jesus went on: "Does anyone bring a lamp home and put it under a washtub or beneath the bed? Don't you put it up on a table or on the mantel?
22 For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.
22 We're not keeping secrets, we're telling them; we're not hiding things, we're bringing them out into the open.
23 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
23 "Are you listening to this? Really listening?
24 Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given —and you will receive even more.
24 "Listen carefully to what I am saying - and be wary of the shrewd advice that tells you how to get ahead in the world on your own. Giving, not getting, is the way.
25 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”
25 Generosity begets generosity. Stinginess impoverishes."
26 Jesus also said, “The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground.
26 Then Jesus said, "God's kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man
27 Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens.
27 who then goes to bed and forgets about it. The seed sprouts and grows - he has no idea how it happens.
28 The earth produces the crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens.
28 The earth does it all without his help: first a green stem of grass, then a bud, then the ripened grain.
29 And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.”
29 When the grain is fully formed, he reaps - harvest time!
30 Jesus said, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it?
30 "How can we picture God's kingdom? What kind of story can we use?
31 It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground. It is the smallest of all seeds,
31 It's like a pine nut. When it lands on the ground it is quite small as seeds go,
32 but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its shade.”
32 yet once it is planted it grows into a huge pine tree with thick branches. Eagles nest in it."
33 Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand.
33 With many stories like these, he presented his message to them, fitting the stories to their experience and maturity.
34 In fact, in his public ministry he never taught without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.
34 He was never without a story when he spoke. When he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything, sorting out the tangles, untying the knots.
35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”
35 Late that day he said to them, "Let's go across to the other side."
36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).
36 They took him in the boat as he was. Other boats came along.
37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.
37 A huge storm came up. Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it.
38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
38 And Jesus was in the stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! They roused him, saying, "Teacher, is it nothing to you that we're going down?"
39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
39 Awake now, he told the wind to pipe down and said to the sea, "Quiet! Settle down!" The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass.
40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
40 Jesus reprimanded the disciples: "Why are you such cowards? Don't you have any faith at all?"
41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
41 They were in absolute awe, staggered. "Who is this, anyway?" they asked. "Wind and sea at his beck and call!"
